  • looking for a place to get parts

i'm looking for a place to get a part for my wifes bike
    she has a 1980 cm200t honda twinstar
it is 6 volt, and i need a headlight
the local dealer here says he might be able to get one for 54.00

    seems kinda high to me,
it has the mounting points bonded to the bulb
it is a sealed beam unit

i figured i would try before i bite the bullet and pay the honda robber

Try your hardest to be the kind of person your dog thinks you are.

You can live to be 100, as long as you give up everything that would make you want to live to be 100!

        How handy are you?

Take a die grinder with a cut-off wheel to the back of the stock sealed beam reflector and cut out around the bulb. Then find a socket that takes the bulb you like and splice it in.

We used to so this to put H4 lights into odd shaped Honda dream sealed beams. Broken H4 lights can often be at wrecking yards for free or almost free. After all it's the socket that's the part needed. Then cut the H4 unit down to a 2 or 3" diameter cone. Grafting the 2 together only requires a bit of heat resistant silicone sealer.

To make this work you need to be a handy scrounger...

          Willy,

The graft is a great idea. I did it with my XT (and had to adapt a Lawn Mower battery) and have light again. Just be sure to were a mask or respirator. Ground glass is really hard on the respiratory system.

The reflector is chromed steel not glass like on a car sealed beam. These things have always been over priced and hard to get.

On bikes with 6" round headlights, some guys would smash out the glass, cut a hole open in the back then use silicon sealer to glue in a 5 1/4" car sealed beam. It worked great and was way cheaper than stock...

However with a 6volt system there are less options. There used to be 6 volt H4 bulbs for older VW bugs but I don't think they're available any more.
