  • Solvang Rally Revisited

    Lads-
In particular: XS650mike, Pat Kelly, LoHo, Uncle Spot, Plane Dick, and Diver Ray.
You have all expressed interrest in a ride to the Solvang Musium, and May seems to be the preferred month. Let’s narrow it down. May 14th is Mothers Day: quess that’s out! How about May 20th and 21st?
The week before Memorial Day. We don’t want to compete with all those cages on Memorial day do we?

Also there is some interest in a smaller, more centrally located meet before then. Diver Ray and I started up Mt. Hamilton (outside of San Jose,) a couple of weeks ago and got turned back by the Sheriff 4 miles from the top because of ice and snow. I guess we were a bit early, but it was a fun ride with a great view and we didn’t even make it to the top! Might make a good group ride when the weather improves.

I have also had Mt. Diablo suggested as a great ride, but I’m not sure where that is.

Hey XSmike, how do you post those pic’s along with your text messages? I’d like to be able to do that.

Old bikers never die, they're just out of sight!

My recently re-built, hopped up '79 Special caught fire and burned everything from the top of the engine up: gas tank, wiring, seat, & melted my windshield all over the front of the bike. Just bought a 1980 Special that has been non oped for 9 years. My Skoot will rise from the ashes and be re named "The Phoenix!"
    I've been riding since 1959.

From your side come up Alum Rock Road over Mt Hamilton and down to the Junction. The resraunt at the Junction will have 200 bikes from noon on on almost any weekend. Take the road to the right from the junction and you come thru Del Puerto Canyon to my house. The road to the left , Mines Rd, takes you to Livermore.
      All great twisty roads.
Coming down from the Lick Observator on top of Mt Hamitton on the east side is VERY trecherous! XStreme stitchbacks. You may see your own tail light it's that twisty.
As you come along Del Puerto Cyn you'll come to Frank Raines Park. On the north side of the road is a motorcycle off-road park, a large one. A couple of times a year they hold trials competition there.
I'm always up for a Hamilton ride.

That's SWMBO's birthday but maybe I can talk her into coming along.

About the pics, check your personal messages, I finally answered.

I've got an abalone dive the weekend of the 20 & 21. We go with the tides, and the tides wait for no one.
The 6th and 7th may work for me for Solvange. And as you know, I'm almost alway's up for a day ride.

Mt. Diablo was really nice when I was there a coupla months ago. The roads getting up it are twisty as all get out. It's likely you could see your own tail as you go up.

The poor rental car I was driving barely made it up it. The view from up there was incredible though. Would be fun on bike, I'm sure.

The ride east from the observatory isn't that bad if one goes vewwwwwy, vewwwwy slow...and you don't have Patrick making fun of you! ("I think I could have beaten you on my bicycle!")

                  LoHo,
Patrick will only beat you on his bicycle if you DON'T give him a kick as he passes you on the curve.
I think April would be a good time for a trip over Mt. Hamilton.

June 3&4 will work for me. I think I'll still be in town, as May is my "travel time" for work.

OK, June I still have time to put in for at least one weekend day off. I/we were planning on a day ride to Solvang, not an over-nighter.
