Hi guys, Forum newbi here. Just recently purchased '80 xs1100lg (the bike i have wanted for 26 years!)Any way, she's a little tired, 39969 on clock.It's been awhile since i have spun wrenches on bikes.Worked in Yam. dealership from '75 to mid '80s.Fell in love with these when we un-crated!!!!!So here we go, lost valve adj. tool, any home-made soulotion?Also been packing carb stix around for last 25-30 years,lost some merc. in process,any one know where to get some?(or improv.) This one has the 1st gear prob. Tries to disengage when you take off, 2nd thru 5th ok.I remember (foggy!!/age ya'know) TSB on this related prob. with shift detent or shift cam? Any sug. on where to start would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jim

I think Yamaha still sells the valve tool. Don't get the MotionPro valve tool, it won't work without modification.
Motion Pro does sell replacement mercury tho.
As far as the shifting, seems like 2nd gear is usually the problem. The dogs that engage 2nd to 5th gear become rounded. In your case sounds like maybe a bent and/or worn shift fork.

If first gear was used HARD, the dogs can get worn. I just did the trans repair on daily ride, and it runs much better now.
Check the tech tips for the "how to" on the trans. I did it without pulling the engine, just flipped the bike upside down.
Do a search on some of the threads for information you may need. It is all here. I was also a Yamaha mech in the late '70s, just after I got my '78 full dresser.

Welcome to the club

I picked up a project 80LG last December.
Got high hopes it will turn out much better looking than my 80G.
(currently on hold due to lack of funds)

Ok, Thanks guys! Seems to me i found the place for great info.! Maybe with a little help she will be cruisin' the streets with pride!!!!!(that would be the streets of Olney IL.)
