  • Nor Cal Snow, Hail, Sleet...

We got dusted pretty good up here but nothing like the San Francisco Bay Area. Very unusual for this time of year. If we get snow it's usually in early February.

Down Diver Ray and E. Liberty's way the Santa Cruz Mountains got snowed on pretty good.

People aren't used to driving in snow here which led to a number of accidents. The TV news this morning was reporting a 31 car pile-up on the Waldo Grade north of the Golden Gate which resulted in the closure of US 101 in both directions and 3 fatalities. As of 8:30 am the southbound lanes were open but northbound was still closed between the Waldo Tunnel and Marin City. People are in the habit of driving 65 mph down this curving grade even though it is posted at 55 mph. In the middle of this pile-up was a drunk driver (who of course wasn't killed). The accident occurred at 2 am which is bar closing time in California.

This is in contrast to the Great Lakes region which has spring-like conditions according to my correspondents in NE Ohio and upstate NY. They're out riding today. Go figure.

The daffodils in my garden are very unhappy about being buried in white stuff.

    Cold...

Even in SoCal it's cold and snowy. The resorts are happy with a foot of new powder and it snowed as low as 2500' in some places. So much for the land of "year 'round rides".

Up here it snowed below the 1000 ft. level. I'm at 2500 ft. We usually get snow maybe once a year in early February. Have you heard anything about I-5 in the Tehachapis? Must've gotten quite a bit there.

        Nasty weather

        Been very cooperative here
        Heavy rain almost every night
        Almost none during the day

Sun's peeking out through the clouds
Time to ride out for a late breakfast

Bright sunshine now, snow's mostly melted but the surrounding mountains are white.

            Get even

75 degrees clear and forever visability here in NC today. Took the SH for a 20 mile test drive after working on the brakes all morning. I'll be in southern CAL all next week so it figures the weather would be bad there. Sounds like a good day to keep the XS inside today out there. Stay Dry

Highway 17 over the Santa Cruz mountains was "fun" yesterday. I left for work a little late, after I was sure the road did not have ice on it.
Once at work, the day went pretty well until the CHP CLOSED hiway 17 because of snow and ice!!! This is a 1300' pass. They did reopen about 3:00pm, so I was able to ride back home the "short" way. My alternate route is about 90 miles, not the 30 I usually do.
I didn't stop to take any pictures, but I did get to ride home through a "winter wounderland"
Woke up this morning to 2" of HAIL covering everything! It's still trying to melt, and it's noon and been sunny all morning

                  snow

Just got home. On way back on Industrial Blvd from my shop, looked up to the hills behind my house. The back hills are all white. There only about 600 feet up. Been a few years since it snowed so low. Mission Peak gets some most years but its gone by the end of the day, sometimes two.

Where I'm at it's about 50' elevation at the base of the foothills in the east bay area. Temp. dropped to about 45 degrees, down rite chilly
