Cost of Dupont paint

I just got back with the quote for paint!!
1 gallon of primer, 3 quarts of color, for two bikes, plus clear, flex additive, etc. at the local paint supply shop.
$888.41
I think I'll be broke before the end of summer, but both bikes will be looking good
All this for a light blue metalic and a black/gold metalflake.

Hey Ray, I agree, dupont is unbeliveably priced. I priced out 2 colors, in a quart and a pint with all the fixins, ran me $250+

Have you priced PPG brand, They are much cheaper paints, (quality also) BUT, after a few extra coats, it turns out nearly as nice. Check out the link I have in my sig. I just painted my bike with PPG Omni paint. Base and flames are both metallic. Check out the Base Coat/Flame paint galleries.

9oz's EASILY covered the tank and side covers with base, and that was with several coats. I could have stopped sooner.

You might want to look into not buying so much paint right away even if you choose to go with dupont.

I agree with bauer. I have never painted a bike, but I have abuddy that is painting a bus. He bought a gallon of gloss black for the roof inside. After painting the entire inside roof with NINE coats, and still has paint left, you might be overshooting your estimate a touch for just 2 bikes.... unless you're gonna just use a paint brush and a roller!

A quart of color will paint a Standard twice and still have have 1-1/4" left in the can. I bought the paint because of recomendation of the first painter who totally screwed it up. Had a good painter paint it again and still had paint left over. The first painters excuse was "it's just an old Jap bike, it looks good enough". It was all I could do not to shoot him, instead threw him offf my property. After frame up restore that was not what I wanted to hear.

I forgot to mention, the PPG paint only ran me $89 and looks VERY good.

The daily ride is going to be a light/medium blue metalic, and my winter project is going to be a black gold metalic. I want the '78 to be the color of the MNS, only a little more so.
I will be talking with a local shop Friday, and looking for more options. I just went into sticker shock, as the last gallon of paint I purchased was only $80 for a gallon.

Another option I chose to go with was a single state paint. It dries to a clearcoat like finish. It saved me from having to spray a clear coat, and I think it will be more resistant to gas spills and such this way. Paint wont eat as fast as clear with acids or petroleums.

I had reducer on hand, so that saved me a couple of bucks, but I figure I could have easily done this project for $100 or less had I had to buy everything.

I still have over a pint of the red left, I really wish I would have gotten a pint instead of a qt. but at least I have extra for later projects.

The story behind the PPG omni paint is that it doesnt cover nearly as well as your more expensive paints, but for the price, you can afford to lay more coats and still wind up with as good of a finish.
