  • Yup, yet another new guy!

Howdy all, I as well just picked up a 79' XS1100 for $300 from a friend and he refered me to this site. The wealth of knowledge here is awsome and I have already learned a crap load just poking around. So for now I just wanted to say hello and I am looking forward to being a part of the XS thang.

    Welcome to the Fold...

Wow ... Looks like TC was right. We're getting newbies like crazy. Hell Yea!!!

Well Prescott, you couldn't have been refered to a nicer group of XSives. Anything you need to know about the bike, just ask. I've yet to see anyone ask a question or have an issue that the collective minds of this forum couldn't solve.

By the way, $300.00 is a steal of a deal. You should take your buddy out and buy him a beer or something.

The bike only has 14K on it right now. He had some carb issues (fuel coming out the air box) about a year ago and just didnt feel like messing with it. (Wife and kids / didnt have time) He said if sombody gave him 200 - 400 dollars for it he'd take it... It sounded like a hell of a deal so I jumped on it. I offered him $300 he took it and now it's my project.

So far i've had to replace the pet cock gaskets to the tank, new tires which I havent put on yet, new brake pads (the old ones didnt look too bad but replaced them anyway), Bled the brakes, I've taken off the air box and put on individual filters. It was leaking fuel out of most of the carb intakes so I currently have the carbs disassembled and about to clean them up / re-install them. There was a bit of crap up in there but it should all clean up well.

Before I tore the carbs down I took it for a test drive up and down the street, Man ... even with it running rich (assuming the floats were stuck open) I am very impressed with the low end torque of this bike. I've rode friends 600cc crotch rockets but this bike has off the line nuts! After a few moments on this bike I can easily see why it has such a following. For the price you can pick these up for and the performance you can get out of them it makes since!

Anyway, thanks for the warm welcome! Looking forward to chatting some more!

Bench test the carbs before reinstalling them. Floats may have been gummed up and the needles sticking. Or the needles might be worn from sitting. Flip the carbs over, hook up fuel, and see if fuel leaks past the needles.(with the weight of the floats pressing down on the needles.
Oh yeah... welcome to the show!

I got my bike by almost the same way. Airboxed leaked gas and he didn't have the time to mess with it. Changed my petcock gasket, replaced the float needles and seat, and adjusted the float heights and vwalla!!! no more leak. It also fixed an idle issue from the overall richness.

                            Welcome aboard!!

Don't know for sure but from some of the posts I've read the filters you put on may make your bike run a little lean w/stock jets.
