You know, those rounded off mixture screws look like they were custom sized to fit the butchered holes in the carb bodies. I've done this before with shortining the springs so they now reach. Not the best solution but it does work in a pinch. Will be
difficult to get dialed in but do-able.

I went back and read this thread. That bike has so many modifications it's gonna be tough to diagnose. Are the bowl vents blocked?

I know that picture shows the newer style plastic floats but still curious about the vents.

Another thought: I just had a bike in the shop that ran like crap on one of the cylinders and the problem was very subtle. The brass float had a tiny breech and took on fuel (carb ran super rich/fouled plug). You had to disconnect the float and shake it to barely hear the fluid inside sloshing around. Replace the float and the bike ran perfect.

Please excuse if this has been covered, If the carburetors are 1979 and it has been retrofitted with plastic floats, are you using the float setting for the plastic floats? Correct float setting would be the spec for a 1980 or ‘81 XS1100 as opposed to brass float settings.
