  • Can you reuse calliper crush washers?

I was able to source new copper crush washers for a break line job, but cannot find ones that fit properly in the recess of the front callipers. The new ones seem to be wider although inner diameter of the banjo bolt is perfect. So the question is if I can reuse the old ones? I was alway taught to always use new ones.
    cheers,
    Dan.

You can heat the old ones up with a propane torch until they're glowing cherry red. Then air cool. This will anneal them and make them like new from a function perspective.

I have also heard quenching them in water. However, I've air cooled each time and they work fine.

I have also flipped them over when re-using using them (no annealing). That works as well to have a "new" surface top and bottom to torque the bolts down and re-conform.

Thanks Howard. I guess I’m not the only one who ran across the size issue. One thing these old bikes do is force one to be resourceful and often creative.

I've reused them in most cases.

        I never annealed them.

Never had a problem (so far).

I reuse them also. Never had a problem.

Same here. Generally speaking I go with new replacements but have come across the clearance issue you described and reused the ones that where on there.

I have a box with an assortment of new copper washers. The ones with the correct inner diameter come in 2 or 3 different outer diameters. Maybe you have the wrong ones. Check Ebay for the correct ones if you want new ones.

Thanks again everyone. One last questions (and likely a dumb one) but the front break lines have slightly different bends at each end. I assume the more angled one should be placed at the top where it connects the one line from the break reservoir and the less angled ones go to the callipers. Is this correct. I should have paid better attention. Also, the torques on these connections is 19ft/lbs.
