The bike is looking good. Are you going to try the "hot glue gun" fix for the dent on top of the tank?

      WOOOHOOOO!

Nice work, John. Did you get the sidestand cutout working?

That's one gorgeous bike. I really like those Jardines. REALLY like them. It's a good thing you're in Texas

Hmm, I wonder how fast you can remove a set of pipes in the middle of the night

          Yeah, John,

THat's a beauty! I've got a back burner idea for a project, making some pipes out of Stainless Steel, figured it will be easier to make 4-2 style vs. 4-1's, but was also thinking about the performance aspect of linkng 1-4 and 2-3 in that cross pattern, vs. 1-2 and
3-4! I didn't want to mess with a crossover pipe, and I think the Jardine design makes more sense for evening out the timing of the pulses from the paired cylinders.

With the 1-2 and 3-4 paired, there are two quick pulses right after each other, but then a longer pause as the cylinders go thru intake and compression cycles only 1/2 crank rotation from each other. Whereas with 2-3 and 1-4 paired, the exhaust pulses are more evenly spaced by a full crank rotation!

            Thanks Guys

I appreciate your kind comments. What is the 'hot glue gun' trick you had mentioned, DiverRay? Actually the dents in the tank are a constant reminder to keep my head out of my ass when I'm riding. I call them my battle scars. Actually, I am going to take the tank from the Foster Child, it is dentless, and my side covers and paint them very soon. SWMBO is the process of painting her FJ1100, and I am going to use the same paint. There should be enough left over to do a tank and two side covers. The color is a Mercedes Benz black metallic. It looks great on the FJ parts. Lots of silver, red, and green metallic. I will take my spare tank to a body shop and have them weld on some dent pulling studs, and I'll pull the dent out, and prep it myself, then if I have enough paint left, I'll paint it and the side covers from Foster Child. I'll put some pics of it after the paint job.
Randy, I couldn't rig up the safety circuit because the side stand switch from the XJ11 is in the open position when it's down, and from what I could figure, it needed to be closed when down, to actuate the relay that I have. I'll keep trying to figure something, maybe I can wire it into the horns. I have put 100 trouble free miles on it so far. I do miss my windshield, though...

I saw the dent but didn't want to mention it, lest it just be a weird reflection, or sumptin'
(Use hot glue to glue a stick to a dent in a tank and try to pull it out. Use a hairdryer to loosen and remove the chunk of glue afterwards)

                    Johm,

Use a double throw relay and hook your cutout circuit to the normally closed side. Then, when the relay is de-nergized, the circuit will close.

Or, break the red/white at the handlebar stop/run switch and run it through the sidestand switch. Sidestand up=ingniton on, sidestand down=ignition off

Nice job John. Makes me kinda sad I got rid of the Foster Child. At least I know it went to a good home. After the Bandera Rally, I am mucho motivated to "finish" the cosmetics on the 80g. Looks like I am going to have to go into the motor soon, lotsa blue smoke at time from the right pipe, suspect a broken ring. Can you say "big bore kit".
                      When a 10 isn't enough, get a 11. 80g Hardbagger

                        Hi Keoki

I CAN say 'Big Bore'! It sorta rolls off the tongue. It ain't cheap. I have been able to buy some .025mm oversize rings for the 78 engine that I have. I got them on ebay. Gasket sets ain't cheap either. I dumped $900 in my engine when it was all said and done, by going the Big Bore route. If I remember right, your 80G was in very nice shape. It shouldn't need too much, does it?

Randy, I used a dtdp relay, and powered it using the neutral safety light circuit. I used the the NC side and ran the circuit through the KS switch. The relay was energized open, and would close whe the stand was down. When the stand was down, the engine would die, but I would like to be able to let it run when on the side stand. I found that by using the NS circuit, that the N safety light wouldn't work because the current was being used to pull in the relay. I would need to find another power source that only comes on when the engine is running. I would still need to use the N safety switch as a ground. I may try to wire it up to the horn circuit. That would get my attention, but ya know, the very first thing that I think of is "is the stand up"? I ain't f'n going through this s#it again.
Again, guys, thanks for the compliments. I busted my ass getting that thing back together, and making it look good. It was a major emotional hurdle for me.

I figured on a grand as a high budget figure. Even at that, its cheaper than any of the cookie cutter bikes out there now. Ya know, going into a motor is like a box o chocolates, never know what you have till you bite into it. I figure on valve job, bore and a new cam chain while I am in there. A few years ago I had a chance to borrow a borescope and everything looked fine then. #4 plug always seems to come out oily. Theres a place here in Austin that seems to appreciate the older bikes so I will use him for the machine work when needed. Gonna wait till next summer to tear down, fall/winter seems to be the primo riding season here.

                              John,

Feed the relay with +12v and use the NS switch to provide the ground
