Hello again to everyone from South Florida. I am back online now that I have power restored. Broward county took an especially hard beating from Wilma. Power just got back on in my neighborhood. 10 days without power, phone and cable sucks. We finally got water that we did not have to boil on Sunday the 30th. Still no phone or cable. But I had a generator and DirecTV so my kids could still watch the cartoons.
At least I was smart enough to have at least 25 gallons of gas and 3 full tanks of propane plus and 10 gallons of water available before the storm. I had my cable ready to go to plug from my generator into my house so I would have power.
Gas lines were pretty horrible with people waiting 6-8 hours to fill up a couple of gas cans. Many stations limited you to $20 worth of gas. I was fortunate as my next door neighbor helped me out to get some additional gas because her daughter manages a gas station. Without that, I would have been in the gas lines myself.
My house made it through OK. Just some trees down which fortunately, did not hit my house. My mothers mobile home unfortunately did not make it through the storm and I expect it to be condemned. She has a little insurance and we are still waiting to hear from the insurance adjuster. Her car also got a bit damaged, but State Farm was on the ball for that and will be sending her a check for repairs in the next day or so. Her house was not insured by State Farm though. Also fortunately, She was not staying in the house. I was over 3 days after the storm doing some temp repairs on the house and I was told they just found a 92 year old women alive in her mobile home. She was trapped in it and could not get out.
This storm was in no way the category 1 they thought it was going to be when it got to the East side of Florida. I understand in my area, we had sustained winds of over 120 for a cell that went through on the south-western side of the eye which went right through Broward county.
Plenty of people still without power and water. Plenty of condemns homes and Apartment building in the tri-county area. And barely a word on the national media about it.
