    Hi folks,
    Just installed a 1980 motor into my 79 frame. It all fit perfectly except I need to confirm the following torque specs. Any help would be much appreciated as there seems to be some contradictions between my Clymer manual for a ’79 special and a Yamaha service manual for the same year. For example, the manuals seems to conflict for the 4 bolt connecting the drive flange u-joints. One said 79 Ft. Lbs and the other 31 Ft. Lbs. I figured the 31 was correct. Weird? Can some please confirm the following torques (see attached) for the motor mounts as shown. Hate to bugger them up!

    I'd go with what the Yamaha manual calls for before Clymer.

      From the Yamaha Service Manual...

      Front engine mounting bolts upper and lower 48.5 ft/lb (10MM bolts)
      Rear engine mounting bolt 72.3 ft/lb (12MM bolt}
      U-Joint 31.8 ft/lbs

        Thank you gentlemen. The Clymer manual I have is way off then. So when you say upper and lower mounting bolts Bikerphil, you mean #2 and #4 on my picture, not #3 which do not have any torques specs. The manual talked about "through bolts" being 72ft/lbs which #1 and #2 are. ...but it appears that only #1 should be torqued to 72ft/lbs.

            #1- 72 ft/lb

            #2,3,4- 48 ft/lb

            The front thru bolt is smaller diameter than the rear, that is why it would be 48

              As an aside, looking at a few posts and Bikerphil’s response to me, I just noticed my faux pas in terminology, i.e., motor vs engine. While people use both interchangeably, the difference is that motors run on electricity and engines run on combustion. I now know better.

                Actually, I was told in school years ago that a motor is self starting, and an engine needs something to start it turning. But, we're splitting hairs at this point! I hope you get that engine/bike running soon. The wet and cold is on it's way.

                    I was told 45 years ago that a motor is an electric motor. An engine is a gasoline engine. I'm just glad it goes varooom.
                    79 F full cruiser, stainless brake lines, spade fuses, Accel coils, modded air box w/larger velocity stacks, 750 FD.
                    79 SF parts bike.
