I remember some threads about people considering customizing one of their XS11's, ways to lower the bike, etc. For those so inclined, I just read somewhere that a shaft from a Virago 1100 will fit the XS1100 and is about 3" longer. Also, an XV750 shaft is about 2" longer. I can't verify these claims, but I leads one to think that if a good welder could extend the swingarm, if would be a matter of plugging in one of the above shafts for a longer, lower effect. The procedure robably requires a bit more precision than how I've described this, but interesting anyway.

I looked up the numbers for an 85 XVS 1100 virago, and except for the first 3 digits (4X7 for XVS and 2H7 for the F), ALL the numbers from the parts I checked are the same, which leads me to believe someone pulled your leg.put something smooooth betwen your legs, XS eleven

The part numbers WOULD be the same. The first three digits are the clue. The second string of digits describe the part and location, shuch as a drive shaft. The third string is for mods made to the part.
If the FIRST string is different, the part is different. The spline may be the same, but the shaft is 2" longer, the FIRST digit will be different.

Diver; good to know that. I was thinking that so many parts were the same, and that the first 3 digits only meant that they were used on this particular model. That leaves me a lot of room to explore and experiment. Will the entire swing arm from the Virago interchange with the XS? Cause if the shaft is 2 inches longer, it could not be used with the XS swingarm.put something smooooth betwen your legs, XS eleven
