  • Clutch nut size?

As I prepare to tear into the transmission I can't help but wonder what size this nut is so I know if I have the right socket. Any help would be great as I didn't find the answer in my search.

    Thanks,
    Clark

    Hey Clarke,

I just went out in the garage and checked my toolbox, I remembered it being big, but not this big! It's a 32mm!!
Do you have that LOW RANGE torque wrench that was suggested, since the clutch basket bolts only need 7ft/lbs!?

      32mm!!!

yeah, definitely didn't have one in the toolbox that big. I have a craftsman bar type torque wrench that does a wide range. Of course they felt like they were on there much tighter than 7ft/lbs...probably the springs pushing on them.

      Thanks,
      Clark

        Hey Clarke,

IS that torque wrench the low scale type, from 0-75ft/lbs, or does it go to 140 ft/lbs? If it's to 140, it's not sensitive enough!! I got the same type from Sears several years ago for around $25.00.
Those are steel bolts into aluminum, and can strip the pressure plate threads easily if overtorqued!

Did you read the Tranny tech tip I posted, shows the tricks to putting the Star plate back on gently and evenly so as not to break off those lips on the ends of the star?! Good Luck!

          yep, I printed them out

Gotta have all available info at my fingertips :-D

it kinda reminds me of pulling cards out of mainframe drawers. two rotations on this side, two on the next, work your way diagnally across until they are all tight and then torque them...come to think of it that's how I tighten my car tires too... I'll check the torque wrench. Now I'm wondering if I have a large enough torq <sp?> bit...

.. hello gentlemen, if i may be so bold as to cut in on this conversation .. as i was working on my clutches this evening i remembered reading in this thread about the socket size of the clutch hub nut.. the socket size on my 79sf is 27mm, i'm not completly sure but i think yours is too..
..i put 3 drops of locktite blue on the theads of the nut and the book states the nut should be torqued to 51 ft pounds ..i have not found a way that i'm comfortable with to hold the clutch hub assembly while i'm trying to turn my torque wrench, things look too easy to break.. so i use a cheap @ss 1/2 inch drive impact that i bought from big lots and low air pressure about 120psi to tighten the nut on with .. i've been doing it this way for a long time with no problems but i grew up in a junkyard so i might have a feel for those things.. if anyone has a better/safer way than please say so
. if you are talking about the the 3 bolts securing counter shaft bearing housing the size is t-30
.. good luck on your mission

              Hey Gnepig,

Thanks for the clarification...DOH!! I went back out and found my 27mm in the BOTTOM of the tool box, I had come across the 32mm first!?

Clarke, sorry for the misinformation! I didn't have an engine apart at the time to verify this size, and I didn't remember ever having to buy a 32mm, or what it was used on now that Gnepig stated the correct size? I hope you kept your receipt if you had already gone out and bought that socket!?

See, I told you all that I wasn't perfect!!

Now, what was that 32mm socket for?? I'm thinking a crankshaft nut on some car I had??

                Hey Mr UNperfect

The 32 mm socket fits on the adaptor nut/bolt for an oil cooler adapter.

Now I just gotta ask...how are YOUR ribs? Nudge, nudge, wink, wink

                  no worries

I had tried a 1" and it was too small and I borrowed my neighbor's 1 1/8" which was too large so I knew it had to be around 1 1/16" and when I saw the size of the 32mm axle nut socket (the whole 1 1/16 almost fit in it) I knew something was amiss and decided to hold off. Besides I forgot to shift the blankity blank transmission into 4th be fore starting so I had to put it all back together to shift it from neutral to 4th.

I read and reread the directions and still forgot to shift it first. Oh well, practice makes perfect right?

The local Pep Boys guy told me that they have a tool set with the larger sockets in it that can be "rented" but they give you a ful refund it you bring back all the tools. go figure. I might do that instead of buying it.

                  Thanks again,
                  Clark

.. sears will sell you the 27mm socket for all of 7 bucks[at least thats what i paid when i bought it 10 years ago] its nice to have the tools on hand when needed

.. hey TopCat, to err is human, i am human at least 10 times a day at my work, i've been lucky and not gotten human on any expensive shiny parts this year so far

.. i have that 32mm socket in my box too and can't remember the last time i used it but i think it might fit the shiny bolt in the middle of the triple clamps also... triple clamp pivot bolt?

The triple clamp bolt is only 22mm. I just took mine apart a couple of days ago.

Some XS11 clutch nuts are 32mm. Depends on the bike. Gotta remove the cover first to see.
