Actually when your haveing problems that might be related to the speed of the machine, the first thing you should do is a disk defrag. Really works wonders sometimes.

Upcoming Upgrades?

Okay folks, been doing a bit-o-research on this possible upgrade to my system!? I forgot that installing WinXp will install at least Direct-X 8.1 if not 9.0. My ATI-AIW Rage 128 Pro card came with a special note about ONLY installing Dx8.0a and then the digital video update for it! This allows the TV tuner and capture program to initialize and work.

I had a bad experience after installing a newer game, it installed Dx8.1 and I lost my video capture/Tv Tuner! I had to manually go in and delete my Dx files, and then do the reinstall of the Dx8.0a and Dig. vid. update to get capture/tuner back!\

Well, I was searching on Ebay for 512MB DDR Pc2100 RAM chips, and a newer ATI-AIW card that would work with WinXp and Dx 8.1 or higher. I came across a guy selling "My" card, and stated that he also provided the WinXp drivers??

So.....I went to ATItech.com to research this. Of course my card is considered LEGACY, and so they don't provide any Phone Tech support/or email tech requests/forum...just drivers and FAQ crap! Well, they listed WinXp drivers for my card, along with a newer version of the ATI Media Center program suite of which the TV Tuner/capture program is one of them. Amongst the info they listed for this is that "These drivers 'should' work with these cards with WinXP", also something about recommended installing SP2 and Dx9.0 before installing the drivers!?!?

So.....now I wonder if I can upgrade to WinXp, get these new video card and program suite files and install them, and possibly be able to continue to use my existing video card instead of having to invest in a newer $$ AIW card that WOULD be compatible with WinXp and Dx 9.0!?!?

I just hate shelling out the $90.00 for WinXp SP2 Upgrade, doing the FULL INSTALL having to reformat my HD's for NTFS instead of Fat32, and then reload everything else, and then find out that I CAN'T use my Capture/Vid card !? Beginning to wonder if I might be better off getting a new Dell made to order, or get it basic and add the Vid Card myself, would get WinXp along with it?!

PS, I've defragged my 2nd 80Gb HD, and changed the location of the editting program's Temp files to my 80Gb drive. I'll check into the Via Chip set drivers. I've got a decent MSI K7T266 Pro2 RU MoBo, can handle up to 3 GB of DDR PC2100 Ram, my Vid Card is 4xAGP!
Any other suggestions or ideas? Thanks for putting up with me!

I looked at the MB specs, and to upgrade the cpu, you need an XP Palomino, there are several on Ebay, but I'll take a look through my old stuff and see if I have something that will work.

Does your present cpu use 100 or 133 FSB?

should you go with XP, upon installation it will go to MS site for the activation and sp2, and several other "fixes". Also will give you movie maker etc...........

Make a partition on one of your drives and you can install XP there. Upon booting you can then choose 98 or XP.

I have a feeling XP may run a little slow on your machine.

btw after you know what ram chips you need, some times you can find the same but faster and usually cheaper, ram is almost always backward compatible. (will not run faster unless mb will allow)

Don't recommend over clocking editing machines and will never buy a dell or what ever. PC is much easier to assemble than an XS. The big PC guys use proprietary components that you can only get from them. Cheesy little part from frys may cost $75.00 and the only one you can use from dell cost $275.00

repaired a friends dell. cpu breaking down after getting warmed up. Stuck a 2700+ in it. Went in the bios and found NO adjustments allowed for cpu or FSB. Went to dell web site to see about updating bios. Turned out their fix, buy a new dell. At least her machine ran 1700 which was better than before.

Looked in my stuff and the cpu I have is a Throughbred, wont work in your board, sorry.

The best deal right now is an AMD 64 socket 754. At mwave.com they have a bundle for motherboard, cpu and 1 gig memory for $177. Will drop right in place of your MB. If you can work on an XS, you can change an atx motherboard.

reformat my HD's for NTFS instead of Fat32

You can use either, or both NTFS and Fat32 at the same time w/XP

machine using right now is my "general purpose" computer. (Shuttle mini sys) dual HD, one w/NTFS only and the other drive w/one partition fat32 and other w/NTFS.

if you aren’t in to gaming, you can get a new MB with integrated video and pick up a capture card for $100.00 or less. Support for latest DirectX, latest drivers, decent sound, both ata and sata ports, usb/firewire etc..

you can later up-grade the video to pcie.

ASUS and Intel make the most dependable MBs (IMO)
Computers work best when configured for specific tasks.
real decent video/editing machine (you make yourself)can set you back $1000/$1500.00.

3 hard drives (minimum) one for programs/os and two in stripping mode for video data.
1 to 4 gig mem, fastest cpu(dual core better) you can afford.
Some editing software will take advantage of multi-threading (most do not)

Hey there Steve and MRO,

Thanks for all the info, and for trying to find a CPU!! I'm not wanting a speed demon, don't do much if any gaming on this machine much anymore...use my XBox for that, and what games I do play are several years old, and it can still handle them!

The amount of capturing and editting I do is minimal, so I don't need the massive power/HD space you were talking earlier! I built this last system I'm using myself, so I'm not too shabby with futzing around inside the case! I've just gotten complacent with this machine..I put about $1k worth into it 4 years ago! Remember, all I really wanted to do was to get a slightly newer version of video editting program than the one I have, that might work better especially under WinXP in keeping the video and audio streams synched during reprocessing! BTW, I checked the WinXP Media program....states a CPU of 3GHz required!!

I won my Ebay auction for the Ulead Video Studio ver 7.0 FULL, not the newer SE=DVD authoring/burning "STRIPPED/non functioning" version! I also got a message back from the guy selling the similar VidCards as mine, and he said he had used them with WinXP and was able to see TV and capture with them!?!? SO....it looks like I may be able to install WinXP and KEEP my Vid/Cap Card and not expend any more $$ for a newer one!

I did check with MSI, found a newer BIOS version, and a newer set of VIA 4-1 chip drivers and installed both. Once I purchase a copy of WinXp "Upgrade" and install it, then I'll get the newer programs and drivers from ATI for the Vid Card!

I already have my main HD 20GB, partitioned into 7GB and 13GB using Fat32, to keep the allocation unit size down to 4kbytes and 8kbytes respectively to keep wasted/lost space down with small files on the OS partition! My 2nd 80GB drive is not partitioned, have Fat32, since it was mainly being used for my LP to CD conversions and my video editting, didn't care that my allocation unit size would be around 32k!

IS it better or faster for WinXP to run on NTFS, or is it just that NTFS allows for ability to keep track of more allocation units, so that large HD's don't need to be partitioned for that purpose??

If it's not any better or faster, then I may just install it over my Win98SE partition using FAT32!?

Also, my ram type is DDR PC2100 at 133Mhz, my FSB is 266, and my CPU clock speed is 133Mhz with 10X core/bus ratio/multiplier and NOT OVERCLOCKED!

Can you elaborate on what faster speed RAM chips I could get that would work with this MoBo, since you say I could use a faster type, but would only run at the MoBo speed!? Would it need to be multiple of the MoBo, like a 266Mhz chip, if there is such a thing. haven't shopped for memory lately!

Can you still buy DDR PC2100?

Need to have DDR, same pin count, need to check if MB can run dual sided mem module

Speed deturmined by MB (some adjustment in BIOS??)

Faster ram in same (DDR) will run just like 2100. Just that some times its cheeper and easier to get.

I had a MB that wouldn't run 333mhz ddr at 266. I think DDR is not as tolerent of running slower as the older stuff. Best to get what you require. You can still find PC2100 around, should be dirt cheap, try PriceWatch.com.

Funny thing about computer hardware, they really got the builtin obscalecense factor working well, seems like every little enhancement you want to make requires a hardware upgrade.

Memory controler on some boards can not use mem module (simm) that used drams on both sides of the module.

Also some older boards do not support 512 and above simms

Running WinXP!!

Hey there Folks,

Just an update! Well, I went to CompUSA, they had a $10.00 instant savings on WinXP Home Upgrade, and I had gotten a $15.00 Gift Card from Work Secret Santa, so after tax, I got it for $80.00 instead of $105.00

Well, I did have a glitch in trying to install it! I opted to keep the FAT32 since my HD's weren't that big! I tried to do the Upgrade which was supposed to save all of my programs and settings. I failed 3 times with a "Load Lib. Failure Err.=1157 485"

So...I then tried a FULL install option and it went all the way thru to the point of deciding where to install it, on another drive or OVER C:\Windows? I stopped it at this point!

Then I went back into Win98, removed many unused programs, as well as the Vid Card Drivers:set to Standard VGA, I also had run Scandisk, and Defrag. Burned copies of "MY DOCUMENTS" and other folders including my Outlook Express *.dbx files, exported my address book and Favorites and cookies.

I then reran the WinXP Install, and installed OVER my 98OS. I lost my Outlook Express messages anyways, and WinXp handles them differently...I can't find any *.dbx files for OE! So...fortunately I had a spare computer running Win98SE, I copied those DBX files into the appropriate folder and was able to access my messages, and the bundled and FORWARDED them to myself, and redownloaded them onto my new XP computer!

I was also able to install WinXP ATI AIW drivers and retained my TV Tuner and capture functions.....YEAH!!! I've been busy reinstalling all of my other applications, NERO burning Rom, new XP HP952 Printer Drivers, DigCam Drvrs, Scanner Program, etc!!

Suprisingly, it seems to run just as fast as my Win98SE, cause my Mobo and Processor were originally optimized for WinXP!? I'm still on the look for a faster processor, but they are still going for over $40.00 with shipping on Ebay! So far, WinXP seems pretty good on this older machine! We'll see!

Question for XP Guru!

My main C:\ hard drive doesn't have much room left after the install. I don't plan on Uninstalling it. I've heard that I can remove the $NtuninstallKBxxxxxxx folders and files!?

There's also an $MSI31Uninstall_KBxxxxxxx with a bunch of reg000xx files, and apparently a MSI.dll (MS Installer?)

Another folder, $hf_mig$ folder which has 32 KBxxxxx folders in it!

I could gain/reclaim 10's of MB's by deleting these folders/files!

Is it alright?? As said, I don't plan on Uninstalling XP or any of the Updates I've installed!
