We may not have built these machines, but everyone that uses this site has had their hands in them in one way or another. That's more impressive to me than people with bikes that HAVE to pay others to work on them. There's nothing wrong with taking it to a shop if you get in over your head, the point is, the people that write in here at least try first.

Everyone's bringing in their bikes... prepping them for Sturgis. Their main complaint is that their harley buddies are all packing their trucks and or rentin' trailers! Sure is nice having an old bike that's comfortable to ride and reliable enough to make the trip.
Guy came in last week to get his Victory serviced, had his harley buddy with him. They were looking at my bike, and harleyboy started makin' wise with the cracks.
I walked out of the shop..."Hey tough-guy... wanna race?"
But before he could open his gob to reply, his buddy said,
    "Better not, Jake... That's an in-line 4!"
    Pinheads!

Ha,Ha,Ha,Ha,Ha,. Better not,, It's an inline 4,.. Ha<Ha,Ha,He,He,He,He,. Thanks for the laugh this morning,,, I needed it. I can just see a couple of goobers lookin at an xs and sayin that. Ol' boy was smart to give his buddy good advice.
Here's a pretty good show on TV. " Bike is Born " This guy is in England somewhere and is not particular only a " Theme Bike " or " American Made or Die " This guy goes and will find an old bike or car ( Car is Born ) and tear into it. When it's done, It's back to it's original glory, Inside and out.
I could go on about Sturgis but as I discused at a recent XS rally with one of our fellow members, Alot of the people who spend a "week at the circus" here in South Dakota are posers. They're posing to be someone they're not. Kinda like a grown ups pretend. I find it amusing that some one will drive accross the country in a suburban, Stop about 50 miles or so out and ride their bikes the rest of the way, Then buy a patch that says " I rode mine to Sturgis" I could go on and on but I won't bore anyone any more about this. Ya really gotta see it for your own eyes.

        stringshift

this string has segued from "anyone send video to american chopper?" to slagging the show to slagging H-D riding poseurs.
        Fair enough.
        But back to the show.
It's a theme comedy, just like "Taxi" used to be.
I no more suppose Paul Snr's role as shop boss as true to life than I credit Danny DeVito's role as dispatcher being an accurate portrayal of a real one.
It's the alleged reality of the bikes that American Chopper builds that's the real crime here. Experienced motorcyclists know that the Teutels' "Theme Bikes" are the extreme raggedy edge of unrideable chopperdom, meant for publicity parade & museum use only but what about the impressionable kids who watch the show? They will come to believe that real bikes should look like that so that's what they will be looking in showrooms to buy and so that's what the manufacturers will start to build.
The next few generations of North American motorcyclists will become the laughing stock of the World.

I do watch the show. I Mikey is the star. I don't want them touching any of my XS1100's.

            forgot the important one

            Czekus21's signature subscript reads:-
"Wrench, Ride, Eat, Drink, Sleep. Life is good."
OK fine, so far, so good, but what about preserving your DNA into the next generation?
Wrench, Ride, Eat, Drink, REPLICATE, Sleep. Life is fantastic.

              No Disrespect Intended

It's pretty easy for US to start sounding like THEM!

I wouldn't trade my XS11 for a V-twin of equal value. I WOULD take a free bike, even if it was a Harley. I would probably have to sell it to pay the attendant taxes due! I would get a basket xs11 off of ebay and see what they could/would do with it.

I wish my xs11 was a little more comfortable on the long rides. I wish I weighed 220# again. I wish riding season lased all year. I wish I had a garage with a cement floor and electricity. I wish we didn't take ourselves so seriously - it takes the fun out of life. On another thread I describe how my xs11 walked away from a friend's almost new Road Glide before I shut it down at 120 mph. I now have bragging rights, but I never get to use them. Every time we meet someone, Harley riders or otherwise, HE tells them how he got an extra couple of mph getting caught up in my draft. It's a great story by a great friend, and though he is dyed in the wool Harley, he is awed by this 25 year old in-line four. He thinks it looks good too. What fun!! I just read this a few minutes ago, and it puts all this into perspective for me:

<Today is a gift. You have eternity to ask what you did with it.>

That's what really matters! Thanks e.z.

              Sorry for the long sermon.

I would hate to try and ride a pushrod V-twin of eqaul value. In todays market that comes to around what,, $1500.00-$2000.00 or so. Thats not a ridable pushrod V. That's pretty much a pile of a couple of parts on the shop floor. Might be only a paint job.
The Paulie's make a nice looking bike and it's just that. A nice looking bike. I have a hard time thinking about taking a $150,000.00 bike and cruzin down the back roads of the mid-west without a chase vehicle. If you want a good suggestion for the show, Do just that. Ride the Black Widow bike or any of their other bike across US-50 from Utah to California in the summer without a chase vehicle. No cameras. Just a clock. Figure your average speed of 50 mph from the point of departure and have the cameras waiting at the end of the line. That's a challenge I would do on my SF. I'd have to take an extra can of fuel but that's mox-nix.

                  Art Work

I have heard it on the show, "These bikes are works of art." Amen. I remember seeing "modern art" for the first time. It was hard to get used to. Some so-called art today is about as much art as some "music" is real music, etc. I guess it's about taste, and the desensitizing of taste buds. I hate to say the dumbing down of society, but . . . If some of the art hanging in galleries is really art, then these are really motorcycles. That's not what this paragraph started out to say, but that's true as well. Some of this stuff is ONLY art, and will only be displayed in a gallery - maybe a nicely arranged Wells Cargo trailer!

Czekus21: I don't want to accept the challenge of the ride you propose, unless its on my XS11. The point I made on the application was for them to build a bike for me that was RIDEABLE for me and my wife. I also challenged them to work with an in-line four, like an XS11 off of ebay. If they aren't up to the challenge . . .

I would love to have a beautiful bike, but my idea of beauty is shaped more like an XS11 than one of their theme bikes. It's like, I know a woman whom everyone stares at when she walks down the street - even other women. But, she is NOT beautiful, she has striking looks - long blond hair, a model's figure. You look, are dazzled, and say, "OK, What's next." What strikes your attention is not necessarily what stays with you in the long haul. Loud pipes are fine, but they don't make any noise sitting on the side of the road.

Very well said. The woman example is the best IMHO. I say it to SWMBO all the time. I call it "and then she spoke." Most of the time, the ones that are most fun to look at are the worst for EVERYTHING else. Hmm... coamparing bikes to women again. A lot of parallels... lol
