The link didn't open for me but I think I know what you're asking about (I have one).
It prevents the light of the gauges from reflecting off the windshield on full-fairing models.

And what's wrong with that?? If you can read up side down, and backwards, you get a cheap HUD type display!!

On another topic, the TCI unit for our XJS and XS, an out fit in N.Zealand makes an aftermarket for the bikes but theres another company outthere that makes a box to replace them, anyone know who they are? What its called, I thought it was made in the USA.....Mark Robertson needs a box for his XJ1100 ......his bikes been sidlined for several weeks, the unit he got from N.Z. isnt working out.

You really should get to the FORUM more often. Maximan posted about the HYPERPAK TCI kit from NZ, and what he had to do to get it to work, seems there were the wrong wires/connectors provided, and once he got the correct set along with the proper pinouts to determine which wire goes to which wire, he got it working....on his XJ at that, and Randy helped. Here are the links to the threads, go to the end of the Hyperpak thread to see Maximan's comments:
So....your friends replacement TCI from NZ will work, once he gets the correct wires connected to the correct wires! HTH.
