  • looking through some old email....

and ran across this bit from merriam cycles:

"We can do anything you might want done to Your XS1100. Carb's are a
little harder than most people realize until they get into them and some
parts can be damaged beyond repair and that would total your bike. A set of
carb's rebuilt to work properly are worth $1200.00."

    HAHAHAHAHA....

    should read:

"We can do anything you might want done to Your XS1100 but you will definitely pay for it. Carb's are a
lot easier than most people realize until they get into them and some
parts can be damaged beyond repair. but not too big of a deal, as partsare still currently available and in fact a set of working carbs can be had on ebay for around $100"

he also told me that the 2nd gear fix will cost $700 in labor alone. by my calculations that's about $175 per hour. and that's the time it takes ME to do it - and i have only done it once before.

don't get me wrong, the guy does amazing things with an XS.... but $1200 for a set of carbs??? $175 + per hour labor?? are you insane???? maybe I am in the wrong business.

oh and he also said that parts usually run about the same as labor - so that's $1400 for a 2nd gear fix...

Well... as far as I can figure em out, they are a helpful bunch, even if you want do do it yourself, they will at least help with a free advice. I asked em once about the 2nd gear, and they explained everything in detail.
I believe they do quality work, and want quality cash for it. I can dig that. If I won the lottery, I'd ship my 78E over for a complete overall. I know I'd get a new bike back, probbably pay for a new bike, but hey! I would have a new 78E! And if anything broke... I would know who to shout at.
Alltho 700 bucks for a 2nd gear fix... seems a bit harsh. Let's see... you need a new oil pan gasket, exhaust gaskets, oil drain plug o-ring, some side cover gaskets, two sprockets, shift fork, and probbably some other stuff. If you know whatcha doin, bout 5-8 hour job. And at that kinda cash, they can't afford any ****ups.
About carb jobs... they can ruin the engine if not properly set up. One thing is gas in the oil thing.... or if they're set too lean, they can make nice holes in the pistons... etc.

If it doesn't have an engine, it's not a sport, it's only a game.
