  • There's a party...but nobody came...

Working today....the only good thing about it was the commute. Freeways as wide as 12 lanes, and very few cars to be found...all for me. Zoom Zoom!

Sitting in Operations...watching computers run...the not-so-subtle low-level rumble from the hundreds of servers and the massive air-conditioning units the only company.

I can see the vibrations in the surface of my glass of water. Vaguely disturbing, that.

There is nobody here....only the guard at the back door....I've seen nobody else in the building. All my workflows are completely idle...kind of odd, thinking about the power available in the systems represented by the 40 flatscreens looped about the room...just sitting there idle......

My bike is waiting in the parking lot....and it's all I can manage to just sit here....

But I can dream....and my hands are twitching...twist the throttle and fly!

I'll see you on the road.

Not quite the same here, for several reasons:

    A. Ony 7 servers
    B. A jail is open 24/7 and needs the same staff levels, holiday or not
    C. 4 of the servers support the county 911 system, and we expect a busier than normal evening/night.

But I feel the same way...the XJ is out in the lot (close-in, as the admin people are gone!) and for the moment it is quieter than normal. Even found time to do some fish tank cleaning....

I plan to take the long way home, 2-lane back road instead of I-70, which takes me past a couple lakes, up in the hills, away from the holiday traffic. Can't wait...only 35 more minutes as I write this!

      Now think of this.
12 hrs. underground in a WV coal mine. 'Working the "3rd shift." You come "outside" and it's daylight; bright and early. You clocked in at 8:30 PM and now, 12 hrs. later , it 's time to go home. 'Got the bike in the parking lot. What a wonderful ride back home. The sun's on the rise, birds hunting and diving, smell that fresh morning air. Once at home; you actually wish you'd put a few more miles on the road before going to sleep. I can still hear "Take the Long Way Home" by REO Speedwagon in my mind. NO B.S.

Can relate...used to work 3rd shift at a warehouse loading semi-trailers. Clock in at 8:00 PM, but out at 6:00 AM. Get on the bike and head home (west) so sun wasn't even in my eyes. Great time to ride!

          On shift since 1971

On shift at work right now, been a flour miller since 1971 here In Halifax Nova Scotia. Seven pm to 7 am then back home for 4 hours sleep. Havent got the XS with me today, but tomorrow I will take it out for a spin, change some fluids and perhaps Wed. ride to P.E.I. for a day trip...........kinda like night riding more than day trips, all the scents that come at you thru the rural areas, just watch out for the porcupines and racoons.......

Good hearing from you again Dan. 'Hope things are going fine in Texas.
Yes, your picture sure brought back the memories. Perhaps the next time we ride toghther it will be a little dryer! 'Sure hope we can do it again some day, some where.
I sure blundered on the artist of 'Long Way Home, should have been Supertramp. 'Oh well, everyone recognized the tune and got the idea.
By the way, I suppose you got the bumpersticker that I mailed you quite a long while back?
Be sure to give me a shout if you're ever in the area, or say maybe within a few [several] hundred miles.
