  • turn signal bulbs

I have been looking everywhere for my manual, can't see to find it. Does anyone know off-hand what number of bulb goes into the front turn signals?

    Thanks

1156 bulb is used in any light that only has one function, ie turn signals, unless they are used as running lights also, but then the socket must have two points of contact for an 1157 bulb.

the ones that came out looked like 1157, had 2 separate elements inside. the 1156 that I bought only has one. the 1156 work for the turn sigs but not the running lights up front. i guess that I will try some 1157, can't hurt only a couple of bucks.

two elements is an 1157, used for front and rear turn/running light on an E model.

my rears are not running. (that sounds a little funny!)

The rears are only turn. Should they be running?

              ??

pull the lens and the bulb, look in the socket,if two points of contact than 1157,if only one point of contact 1156.Or count the wires going into the turn sig stalk,3 wires 1157 or if two wires 1156. Ok you nice and confused by my diagnosis? On my xj the backs are turn only,i'm not sure about my older brothers

Of the three XS's that I have owned, none of them has had OEM front running lights. Both the front and rear turn signals are for just that function...turn signals. Now some bike with fairings may have running lights built in, but they would have to be something that is wired up by the installer, at least that is how I see it. I don't know if the factory supplied fairings have running lights in them or not.

interesting, i have 2 wires going into the turn signals, can only see one place for the bulb to slide into, yet i have 2 element bulbs in it (both sides) sounds like the PO may have tried something weird. I think that I will put the 1156 back in that I bought and return it to stock.

According to the wiring diagram, your "E" should be like my "F" Running lights and turn signals up front. 1157 bulb (2 filament) One wire for running, one wire for turn signal, ground through the stalk/stem holding the light. Bulb socket should have two contacts at the bottom.... that is, unless... someone had previously dicked with it.

Perhaps it's just the Standards that have running lights. I just checked the schematics for an E and an F and it shows them to have running lights. The E that I had was parted out right after I bought it, so I didn't really pay attention to the lighting. Niether of my Specials have running lights though.
