  • Need a price for an 80 special

Ok... Have a line on an 80 special. Haven't seen it yet. Guy says there's TCI probs, bad startin' bad running' but obviously he has no clue. He took it to the old shop I used to work at and they ripped him off, and broke his key in the ignition! (Their usual work style). Sounds like carbs, though he's had the TCI apart to stick his pudgy fingers in there. Sounds like just a resoldering is in order.
Anyway.. I'm not worried about the electrical or carb stuff... Just need an estimate of what to offer for the bike. Needs a headlight bucket (I have no round spares) and a speedo housing. No windshield or bags. That's all I know at this time.
He wants $900. (I was too polite to not laugh)
    What's a good price range?

Not running, needing work? I'd say about $500 is reasonable, if you think there is no "major" problem, such as 2nd gear.
I paid $800 for mine in December, running with a fairing and rear box. It needed tires and brakes to be safe, but I did a LOT more to it.

Interesting. Just checked Kelly Blue Book and they gave:
        Trade-In Value (Good Condition) $975

Trade-in Value is what consumers can expect to receive from a dealer for a trade-in unit assuming an accurate appraisal of condition
Of course, this machine is not in good condition.
So... checked my NADA (National Automobile Dealer's Association) appraisal guide. Have the 2002 edition, so is three years out of date, and it only goes back to 1981.
But for a 1981 Midnight Special (Not the '80 that I'm looking at)
Rough trade in value wholesale: $665
Clean trade in value wholesale: $770
        Average Retail: $1,190
These are dealer values.. what a dealer would give you, and then what he'd sell it for.
Seeing how the book is three years out of date, the price drops. And these values are for an '81, not an '80, the price drops more. Hhmmm.... I'd be comfortable in the $400/$500 range, as it does need work to get it running, or to just use it for parts for my other three 1100's. (would be nice to have another bike with a clear title)
        Thanks for the input.

.. if the bike looks nice and is all there and has a title; ie has a nice paint job, the chrome is not all rusty or scratched up, the frame is not rusty and the aluminum is not all oxidized then it could be worth 4 to 500 bucks -not running
.. if it looks like crap, doesnt run and has a title its worth $150.
.. if it doesnt have a title then its worth $75.
i got my first xs11 10 years ago for $50. since then i have owned 12 xs11s total and the most i have ever paid for one is $200. it had a title and was not running but it had a cool exhaust that i wanted real bad
.. so the moral of this story is how much is this bike worth to you?
