    It Runs!

Being a mechanic got the better of me today, and I decided that, through the hands of my wife, I would try to get Ol' Twilite to crank up and run. I inserted the key and turned it on...nothing at all. Not even the horn, which is wired independently of the ignition circuit. I had WK (Wildkat/wife) pop of the right side cover and use a test light for power at the battery cable at the solenoid. The light glowed. Battery was still connected. Had WK probe the fuses, cold. Had her remove the left side cover and check the main fuse...destroyed in the accident. She dug out the pieces as I located an other fuse. She inserted the fuse and closed the holder. I turned the key on...idiot lights glowed! I turned the left petcock on to prime the carbs, but WK said to stop, as there was a fuel leak. We examined the petcocks and lines, and found that the line to #3-4 carbs was knocked off, and missing. I left the fuel off and hit the starter button. It cranked and acted like it wanted to start, but wouldn't catch. I set the choke, and hit it again...It came roaring to life with a mighty cloud of blue smoke, and a hearty growl from the pipes. I gave it a couple of twists, just to get that vibration going through my body. What a sensation! I idled it down and shut it off. Just knowing that it still runs is a very positive sign. We will be back! The bike is only 1,400 miles from hitting 100,00 miles, and I'll be damned if it don't happen without my ass in the seat! Looks like WK will be learning a whole lot more about the xs in the months to come, as she will be doing a lot of the physical work on the bike. We may start earlier than expected, now that I know she wants to help bring it back. I think the biggest problem will be the fork ears attaching the headlight bucket, and getting the right side muffler straightend. Wish us luck.

        Recovering

        Hey John,

Great to see you home and on the mend. I have a little experience with the ole backbrace myself...fell off the roof taking down Christmas lights in 2000. Smashed L1,2, and 3. Mine were compression fractures and we elected not to due any surgery and opted for 4 months in the clamshell plastic brace instead. One thing I can say, do just what the saw-bones tell you even if you think they are over doing it. Take puh-lenty of time to fully heal. I tried to push it a little and ended up wearing the brace for longer than I wanted to. Your back isn't something to mess around with...as I'm sure your aware. You may just have to live vicariously through our tales of riding adventures, etc. for a few months, which we'll be more than happy to provide on these pages, I'm sure. I am now fully recovered with no lasting effects, though I do see a Gonstead Chiropractor once a month or so, for some tune-ups.

Here's a little insight from my injury and recovery.

        1. The Sweet Creature (SWMBO) and I really got to know each other again in my recovery period at home.

        2. The History Channel has some sweet programing in the mornings.

        3. Popeye is one funny S.O.B. ( The percocet may have had something to do with this.)

        4. You scare the hell out of 'em and it's pretty easy to tell who your real friends are.

        5. I had plenty of time to plan my own business which I had wanted to do for some time. I went ahead with my plans and now have much more time, and have drastically improved my financial position.

I think everything happens for a reason bro, and even the worst situations can turn out great if you work at it. You just seem like that kind of guy.

Take it easy, enjoy your time at home,etc...get better.

        Later,

        Keith

          Hey John,

Yes, that's great news that it'll fire up! I know you put a lot of time and effort into restoring your machine. I wish I had a set of fork ears to give you! If you can't find any OEM ones in good condition, there are after market generic ones you can get, seen them on MikesXS, and DK, and other places!

BTW, I think you had made a comment some months ago about catching up to my and the # of posts.... if you'll take a look, you'll see I just passed 2000! However, you'll have lots of computer time to contribute, so you might catch up to me yet!!!

WK will probably end up being a better mechanic than you after all of this....heaven knows she's a better rider!!!

            Kickstand relay?

            Hey John,

Sorry about the accident, and its great that both you and the bike come thru relatively okay... but your accident and the replies from a lot of other riders has me wondering, doesn't the XS have the kickstand relay that should have shut down the bike when you took off with the kickstand down? I have an XJ, and I know it has the relay...

              Kick stand relay

To my knowledge, the XS does not have a kick stand warning...that is until I put one on mine. I realize that I have been forgeting the stand more often, and WK has to remind me more and more often of it. I have an XJ that is pretty much stripped, but I think it still has the side stand swtich on it. I'm going to wire it in on my bike and if nothing else, at least have it trigger a light in the pilot box. Maybe I'll tie it in with the oil pressure light. That will get my attention.

WK would probably like it better if you tied it into a 2X4. You know, a quick "thunk" to remind you of the sidestand!
Glad your in good spirits, and it sounds as if you should be riding before winter makes it too cold.
