  • MIA: rear axle spacer

I noticed when I was reinstalling the wheels on my bike that I'm missing the rear axle spacer. I'm pretty sure that this part is necessary on both special and standard models. I'm not sure how long I have been without it, but I can have noticed a bit of leakage around the final drive (maybe because without the spacer it's getting torqued a little less than straight.

I checked on bikebandit to see if it was in the schematics to buy or get more info about but have come up with nothing.

Just how crucial a thing is this. Am I a lunatic for even riding without it in?

Does anyone know the dimensions of this spacer so I can stop whatever damage it's absence is causing?

If you go to Yamaha-motor.com, select street motorcycle, parts & services then view parts catalog. Select your bike model and you can then call up the rear wheel page, view the exploded detail that shows all the peices that holds the rear wheel in position. You can then compare yours to theirs to determine what peices you are missing.

I used to have a direct link to the catalog pages but since Yamaha updated their site my old link does not work anymore.

Thats the same thing bike bandit has. I've got an SF too. Is there a spacer inbetween the pinch bolt and the caliper rocker on yours?

I just went out and looked at my SF and the only spacer that I saw was between the brake disk and brake caliper mount bracket. next to that is the rear brake resivoir mount braket then the pinch bolt. I would think that if you were riding it around without the right spacers, that the back wheel would be floppin around and the gears would not be engageing for the rear wheel.

There is a washer that is welded on the torque plate. It is on the outside toward the pinch bolt. From the rear hub outward; oil seal, dust cover, shaft collar, caliper ass'y, torque plate and swingarm. That is how my rear wheel ass'y lines up.

I don't think the standard models have that welded washer on their torque plate. They have an additional spacer.
