Old bikers never die, they're just out of sight!

My recently re-built, hopped up '79 Special caught fire and burned everything from the top of the engine up: gas tank, wiring, seat, & melted my windshield all over the front of the bike. Just bought a 1980 Special that has been non oped for 9 years. My Skoot will rise from the ashes and be re named "The Phoenix!"
    I've been riding since 1959.

I'm not sure how it started but here's my theary. A bunch of guy's got together and were wondering how to get outta the house, away from momma and the kids, They came up with the holiday to kick off the vacation season and have an excuse to go fishin, campin, barbiqu's, and drink beer. They told their better half it was to commemorative the momoriales and she said O.K. So in their memory, Eat lots of grilled food made with alot of grease, drink lots of beer without feeling guilty, Go fishing without any worries, and enjoy the fruites of our ansesters wisdom
Oh.. I alomst forgot.. Enjoy the riding seasom. Hopefully the bikes are tuned and ready.
E.Liberty,,,. You might check the hot wire leading down to the starter. It may be loose

¿Does anyone know how Memorial Day started?!???

...it makes me wonder HOW we are still a free country... apparently schools are NOT doing their job - this was one of the 1st things I learned in 1st and 2nd grade.

last Monday in May; commemorates the members of the United States armed forces who were killed in war.

The ceremony actually started *during* the civil war, and was 1st 'officially' observed right after the war in 1868. By the 1890s most states observed it *except* the south - until WWI.

The National Holiday Act of 1971 was passed by congress to ensure a three day weekend for Federal holidays.

...I guess it'd be easier to remember *if* someone in your family died in war (?)

...or if one spent any time in the military, Uncle Spot.
While I was in basic training in '82, I was part of a detail that went around to all the cemetaries on Ft. Benning with a bucket and a brush, scrubbing tombstones and planting a flag on each one. Had plenty of time to stand there and read about the sacrifices of others. Gives a great education and puts things in proper perspective.

It was originally called Decoration Day and was to be a day to decorate the graves of the War dead. The 30th of May was chosen because buy then It was warm enough that flowers would grow in the whole country and could last all Summer.

The important thing remember is that not having to know what the holiday is for is part of the freedom that those honorable men/women died for.

              Memorial day revisited

Those who said Memorial day was originally celebrated to commemorate the soldiers who died in the "War Between the States," can move to the head of the class. It is not true, however, that it wasn't observed in the South until after it was established in the north. In point of fact several southern states were observing "Decoration Day" very shortly after the official end of the war, and very possibly before it was observed in the North.
We have a really fine "Civil War" reenactment every year where I live. This is the first year in the past five that I haven't gone out to volunteer for the "Confederate Cause." No I'm not a racist, I'm just a history buff that happens to have been born and raised in Texas.
More Americans died in the "War Between the States" than in all the rest of the wars combined since then, and I don't forget what the day is really about.

O.K. I take it that everyone thinks I'm a dink for not giving the correct answer. I did a few years in the Army and after serving, ( as everyone who has can attest to ) will never forget what the meaning of what the holidays are about. Especially Momorial day, Veterans day and flag day. It seem ironic though that Momorial day sparks off the vacation season.
E.Liberty... Did you figure out what the problem was???

Memorial Day was given credit to being started by General John A. Logan. General Logan servered in the Union Army during the Civil War. Gen. Logan was born raised and lived in Southern Illinois most of his life except for his military time. Look him up. very interesting reading.
