  • Gold XS11 Wheels

    I bought a 79 XS11 Std at a slavage yard in Colton,CA for $300.
It was sitting out in the rain and had not been taken out back.
I had asked for a square tach for a XS11 and the owner said "you can have the whole bike for $300. It had 18K mi, no gas tank, but was all Black, gold wheels, 4in1 exhaust, and no center stand.
Did Yamaha make a 79 Midnight Special Standard?

Calif DMV wanted $280 to bring the registration up to date, so I thought I would get it running and swap gas tanks and CA License plate from my 79 XS11 std if I wanted to ride it.

As I am working full time at 68, I don't have time to rebuild the bike. So I am using some of the parts for my other 79 XS11 std parts bike that is running great now (40K mi). It needs the tach and the Speedo circuit for self canceling turn signals.

I needed new tires for the running 79 XS11 and didn't want the rear TUBE type wheels. So I swapped the gold wheels (Tubeless) from the Midnight, which has drilled brake disks. The rear wheel is a 18" Wheel, made from a 17" inner spoke section and a 18" rim, weld bead around the rim. No Dunlop Elite II 491, but I found a Dunlop 509 tire, sport/touring, 130x80-18 V.

Question: Has anyone seen a 18" rear gold wheel for a 79XS11 Midnight??

The xs850 Midnight Special had an 18 inch wheel. That may be where it came from. Someone may have looking to lower the engine speed when crusing, and trying to get a little better gas milage. There was no 79 Midight Special, as far I know.
