  • It is time . . . again . . . countersteering.

Saw another yahoo that couldn't steer almost crash yesterday . . . and worse, almost take out the cute gal riding with him.

Counter-steering folks. If you don't know what it means, don't be too proud to learn. Just try it.

The best demo I've seen yet . . .see the link . . . read the article . . . the quick-time movie takes a bit to load but works (real player file is missing).

Like Kieth Code said in his video:

"Countersteering is the ONLY way to steer a motorcycle"

You don't lean it, it leans you. After your countersteer input.

I took the MSF Experienced Rider Course many years ago so I could get my base stickers while stationed at Andrews AFB. We spent a serious amount of time on counter steering and becoming very comfortable utilizing it at speed. A real eye opener! Everyone should learn as much as they can about countersteering, it WILL save your life!

I have found that when I want to turn, change lanes or perform almost any manuever, the bike just seems to move on it's own, almost like it can anticipate what I want to do. Just a light pressure on the bar, and it steers. I have never taken a riders' course, and I have been on a bike since 78. I have been down four times, each not serious, and nothing hurt but my ego. I think just being cautious, and alert can help to avoid most incidences.

I know what you mean.....I've been riding bikes since before I could drive. It is just natural to countersteer and keep your eyes open to the world around you. The thing that bothers me is that the kids on bikes these days have gained their "vast" driving experience in the cage. Then they get the bright idea to get on a 130 HP crotch rocket and when they get into trouble, revert to the "cage" mentality. That means to go right, I have to turn the bars to the right........wrong. I've seen it too many times, but I'm preachin' to the choir.

When I got my firt bike, a 72 Yamaha TX 750, I was in the Navy in San Diego. That is where I learned to ride a street bike. I hadbeen on a few dirt bikes before. Talk about baptism by fire! Hell, there were more people there, than in the entire State of Maine at the time.

Yeah, I know what you mean by trial by fire! I spent several years riding my bike in the Washington, DC area. Three accidents, all caused by cages not paying attention, resulting in two totaled bikes. I learned alot about picking your my line and making myself obvious.

                Older thread

I was jsut thinking about this thread the other day while listening to the news about Browns star Kellen Winslow that ran his crotch rocket straight into a curb in a parking lot while learning to drive a bike.
Thats gonna cost him a couple Million.
He'll probabley be out for the season too. Again.

Isn't he just in his second season? How can one be a 'star' when they have spent most of their time on the DL? His dad was a star, but the name alone doesn't make you a star.
As for the wreck...can you say 'Stoopid'? Big bad ballplayer had to have a badass bike, just to show off for his posse, or the leeches that hang around while you still have money, and coke. He was to cool to learn on a smaller bike. Sounds like rapper/thug mentality to me. Just my .02$ worth.

I say we find a nice wide open place with lots of room to run, wall it off, and airlift all these young crotch rocketeers in. Then they can be 'cool' and do all their stoopid stunts and impress each other, as they seem to be the only ones who are impressed by that kind of garbage. They can come out when one of two criteria are met:

                    1. They are maimed and/or mangled beyond any and all ability to throw a leg over a bike again.

                    or

                    2. They have finally learned proper respect for the machine they ride and all the other people who share the road with them.

Then they may rejoin polite society
If it doesn't have an engine, it's not a sport, it's only a game. (borrowed from strom)
The idea is to die young............as late as possible.

No Kidding...to quote my favorite actor Bugs Bunny......."What a Maroon!"

I guess maybe it's not so funny when you think about all the other Maroons out there on 185 mph bikes.

I agree! I am still youngish and full of piss and vinegar, but apparently my common sense grew in a little early. I know all these guys my age and younger who want motorcycle and they all want a hyabusa or a ducati or some other overly-street-fast bike for thier very first bike. My comment is always the same, "you shouldn't have any trouble flipping yourself right onto your back the first time you open it up. You might want to start out with a smaller bike first."

Let 'em buy the damn things, and then we can weed 'em out, and then we'll only have sensible riders left. I don't think the repli- racers should even be allowed on the street, but you know how corporate greed is. Anything to make money. That's what it's all about. They don't care how many young lives are ruined by these machines. Oh, sure, they tell you to take a rider safety/trainig course, and have all these safety stickers on the bike, blah, blah blah...but that is only because they have to. I don't believe they really give a damn.

C'mon John, blaming the manufacturers for stupid bike tricks is like blaming condom makers for illicit sex. A guy can buy a hot bike and be just fine, or he can get a hot bike and kill himself in seconds. If you were 25 and making millions playing a game that makes you a god among mortals, would you buy a hot bike and expect to be able to ride it? Yeah, me too...

I'm calling him a star because he's well known in the same vain that James Dean is a star and cannot act.
I've been reading up about our favorite 1st daft pick and permanent I.R. star. Apparatntley he was into doing stunt riding big time. Although he's only been riding for about a month. Been doing wheelies all over town.

Eventually Darwin will sort things out for him. Unfortunatley he's putting a major hit on the salary cap of the best team in the NFL. IMHO
