  • the long ride!

7:21am in Florence SC... about to go pick up my new (old) XS750 and drive it back to FL... 600 miles! My son is my "crew", he'll be tailing me in the car... wish me luck!

        WE MADE IT!!!

Woo hoo! We got in at 1045pm, what a long but cool, day! The bike ran like a dream, in fact I think it improved over the day... 65-70 almost all the way... we had to reglue a windshield support, and we had 30 miles of rain out of the 600, but all in all a great ride! I need sleep!

Now, for the bad news, this XS750 could bury my XS1100, so now I have to really figure out what is wrong with the XS1100!!!

the very nice and smart gentleman I bought the XS750 from (he has 9 motorcycles, 7 in mint condition including a Norton Commander 750, a big Honda CBX and a couple of 900cc plus Kawas, and repairs and maintains them all) suggested maybe all the cylinders weren't firing... I think he might have something, cylinder 1's plug is black and oily... so, how do I check definitively? I also think it needs a carb redo... it always smells like gas (and the 750 just went 600 miles without a drop of oil burned and no leaks anywhere...)...

since I am a base amateur, should I take it in to a mech, maybe this is a bit too complicated for a first timer?

Why don't you try and make a deal with the guy you bought the 750 from? Sounds like he knows what he is doing and enjoys working on bikes.

                          Hey Jazz,

I thought you had some other Xsives in your area? Even if they aren't GURU's, 2 heads are better than one, I'm sure you and soem help could figure out the problem with your #1. Sounds like it's too rich? I can't remember if you did a compression test and if they were fairly even across all cylinders?! Could be a sinking float, or a stuck one, or a damaged vacuum slide, holes in the rubber tops, etc.?? They aren't as hard to work on as you might think. DON'T take it to a mechanic. You've got a great running XS750 to ride while you work on your 11. But yes, the 11 should blow the doors off your 750!

                            Hey Dr. Jazz,

I concure with TC. Don't take it anywhere learn on it and then the pride from having done it yourself will give you a lot of confidence on the road. I know cause it did for me.
