Hey guys, I need a new battery and most of my freinds that ride use the Wall Mart batteries and love them. I went to get one but the list of applications did not include a 27 year old xs 1100. Imagine that. I think that the brand was everstart or something like that. Does anyone know the model that I need? Do you go on demensions alone, or are there certain things that I need to look for?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Travis,
Wally World does still carry the battery we need. I bought one just a week ago there. The battery number is Y50-N18L-A. Most any battery with the N18L-A number will work. I think there may be another battery that is the same size, but the cables may attach to the sides of the battery posts instead of to the top of the posts. You want the the one that attaches to the top.

      battery

the oem spec battery for the xs1100 is the:

      y50-n18-la @ 260 cca flooded battery

the other john refers to is the:

y50-n18-la3 @ 260 cca flooded battery, it has the post config that allows bolting from the front of the battery.

upgrades that will work and provide better performance are:

      y50-n18l-a-lm @ 275 cca flooded battery

yix50l-bs @ 300 cca sealed vrla battery (maintenance free wet)

ytx24hl-bs @ 350 cca sealed vrla batt. (maintenance free wet)

      heppc680mj by odyssey
      hca = 680 for 5 seconds
      cca @ 0 degrees 280

for the xj the proper oem battery is the:

sy50-n18l-at @ 260 cca *this includes the battery sensor

the above upgrades will also work but the sensor will have to be bypassed.

another option some run is a regular sealed lead acid battey
most common is the 12 volt 18ah it has nut and bolt connectors and is the proper dimensions

      cheers, Daryl

Forget Wal-Mart and order a real battery on-line.

          Go to WestCo Battery

And order a Absorbed Glass Mat, top of the line battery:

It's $80 bucks but I have had good luck so far with WestCo batteries on a few diferent bikes....There is a tech tip on Maint free batteries for XS-XJ11's.

          http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=8 ,

I can't see putting a regular battery that needs water in one of these fine rides.

Jerry bought one a couple of years ago, I have only had mine a year. They seem to be a great battery...I have yet to hear anything bad about them on any list I am on. (Trophy , Tuono, Bandit, XS11)

                Wal-Mart EverStart Batteries...

I just put an EverStart in my bike, because all other solutions were over $100 bucks with shipping.

The EverStart was about $41. You could probably do better if you have more stores or a Sam's Club near. (We don't.)

The battery appeared rather fresh from the factory, it had a clean box without the layers of dust that have accumulated on most of the other batteries.

                It is the latest model.
                ES50-NL18-LA3 (Replaces the ES50-NL18-LA2)

I mixed the chemicals to the proper level, let the battery sit for an hour, added additional fluid as needed, then charged the battery @ 2Amps for about 8 hours. (Exactly as instructed.)

The battery showed a good charge. I put it in the bike, and returned my core for a small $5.00 refund.

The problem is, after only one day's usage in our (still) 30F degree weather, the damn EverStart won't operate the blinkers if the engine isn't running. (The near dead DieHard that I took out still did.)

A sure sign that the battery is not holding a decent charge or putting out the righ voltage. I have no shorts or opens on my bike either. The DieHard that was in the bike had been there for over 6 years, and still put out enough power to start the bike if it was above 45F and operated the blinkers with the engine off. (It is just that I'm tired of push starting the beast, because it is ALWAYS below 40F at night here. Let me tell you it is not fun trying to push start the pig, in the sleet at 3AM.)

I'm a little disappointed. I'll ride the battery around for the 1-month warranty period, and then take it back for a replacement.

                YMMV

I've had my Westco battery for 3 years now, no sign of performance loss. I bought it when I was in AZ, rode often with temps 100 deg + and here in Colorado often ride below freezing. (Day temps vary by 30 - 40 deg F from morning till afternoon, so a cool 25 deg F ride into work means a nice 55 to 60 deg F ride home.) Battery has performed very well in both extremes. I can ususally ride some days every month, so no special precautions taken between rides. i.e. float chargers not used.

I was tired of having to top off the regular battery every couple thousand miles of hot summer riding. The AGM style (Westco and others) coust double the Wallyworld standard batteries, but IMHO are well worth the extra cost. No acid to leak if you tip over. No fumes coroding the side covers and wiring. Warranty is nothing to brag about (1 year?) but service life is expected to be greater than a typical lead-acid battery.

                    I hear you...

Sealed batteries are better. I just wanted to illustrate that Wally World batteries may work fine, and then again you may end up with probLems.

One thing that you can do to minimize corrosion... The new Wal-Mart batteies come with a clear hose to put on the gas vent when you fill the battery for the first time.

Well, if you leave the hose on there, it is long enought to fit through the battery tray, in front of the swingarm and into the holder for the other overflow hoses. That should help minimize corrosion.

I've got some days off, and tomorrow we (my XS & I) and a case of Corona are going to the sand dunes at the river.

Well see how it handles a good jostlin'. I've put to shame many dual sport bikes and four wheelers... But I digress.

The battery so far has started fine, so I'm NOT 100% sure of the problem, but the weather here has suddenly been in the balmy 50s and 60s. I will post more when I've figured out the problem entirely.

My recommendation is to get a sealed battery, but if yer a po' boy that'd rather spend yer loot on Coronas, then maybe this thread will make you a lil' older-budweiser.

the gell-cell batterys are the best, mostly because no more acid marks all over your mufflers and swing arm and you never have to put water in them......there is another place to get them and save your self the shipping cost.....your local hd dealer sells a realy good one. it costs: $81.00 its worked very well in my xs for a year and a half now.....the part #66010-82B ...and for you guys who cant ride during the winter i suggest the super smart battery tender jr for $40.00 this will help your battery last for years

                        Future?

Yeah, the future is a cool place... but it is definately NOT at the HD dealer.

I would consider that place more of a museum.
