I had a new tire put on, and the shop sheared one of the two M8 washerhead bolts holding the brake caliper to the forks... it is held on now by a shorter bolt, but I want to get a replacement... no one has them, the Yamaha shop just laughs, of course! any ideas?

You should make that shop find and pay for the new bolt. ***king idiots! Most any decent fastener supply house should have them. I don't know if they'll have type with the built in washer, but they will havethe correct length, and you can add a washer. perhaps a salvage yard...Don't forget, the xs750-850 used the same caliper, so the bolt will be the same also.

yeah, I think I will find a new shop... they also told me the engine had to be split to adjust the cam chain... actually, I think I will end up being my own shop...Dr. Tim Walters

You need to ride around and look for independant shops. Check the place out, see if there are any 'older' (40-50 year old) mechanics working there. That will be a good place to start. Those guys will know a whole lot more about older bikes in general, so they have probably seen a good number of XS's. Any time you have a doubt about what a shop claims needs to be done, just give a yell here. Someone will be able to 'splain how it should be done. Ya know... if ya gots tools, a repare manwel an' ifin ya kin reed ... Well, some one here can get get you through it. Just ask. And don't ever go back to that butcher who screwed you over. How did they break the caliper bolt off? It isn't tightend all that tight, and it has a nut on the other side too! What a bunch of idiots.

yeah, I was so hoping that shop would work out... they have older guys working there (although the guy that worked on mine was a 20 something who rides a crotch rocket... ) and lots of old bikes in there being worked on... it is an independent shop... not a dealer.Dr. Tim Walters
