When applying for a drvers license. Do you think that there should be questions on some part of the test that would measure someones apptitude and common sense level? Also measureing the ability of someone, should they have a flat tire, to change that tire? Let alone check their fuel level and oil level.

Now to answere my own questions. Yes I think that there should be questions on the test measureing someones abitlity to use common sense. I don't think that a person should be allowed to drive if they connot show that they have the ability or common sense to change a flat tire. Driving is a privlage that I am happy to be a part of but when the day comes around that I can't take responsibility for the maintence and posses the ability to LOOK down at my gauges, check the oil and change a tire, then I don't think that I should be able to drive because I would be putting everyone else on the hiway at risk. ( running out of gas during rush hour, driving to fast for conditions, not looking over the shoulder for a lane change etc..) The list goes on and on. You all know what I'm talking about. Everyone in the association has, at one time had a near hit, or have been involve in a near miss. Think about that. Now, happy trails, Hope to see everyone at Bean Blossom. Bring the guitar's. I'll have mineS.R.Czekus

Certain driving offences should be punishable by death:
1. Flicking a cigarette out of a moving car.
2. Not using signals, hand or otherwise.
3. Changing lanes without looking.
4. Changing lanes in front of a vehicle moving at a significantly greater speed than your own. Even though you just signalled. And even though you looked. You obviouslty have no depth perception and cannot judge closing speed, you idiot! Pay no attention to that fast-approaching cliff.
There. That's better.

Cell phones
What about mindless cell phones drivers. The California Highway Partol was told to do a survey while making all stops and at accidents to see if C-phones were being used. They compiled the results and still the law makers do not at least outlaw the handheld units. Money talks and common sense walks. I think that C-phones are a very useful device but not while driving.

A previous boss used to say "There is nothing common about sense!" and I believe him. Back in the "old" days, taking driver training in Wisconsin, out instructor made us not only change tires but put on tire chains. This was a necessary skill in rural Wisconsin for winter driving...
I agree that new drivers should be able to:
Open the hood
Point out fluid level check points
Open the trunk
access the spare tire and tools
explaine how to change a tire
Open the glove box
read at least1 chaper of the Owner's Manual under the observation of the tester
Of course, I think new motorcycle riders should pass a commn sense test, like "Is it OK to ride a high powered motorcycle in only sandals, T-shirt, and shorts?"Jerry Fields

Wow now Jerry, them is a can of worms you be messin with You call it common cents , I call it FREEDOM TO CHOOSE. Underline FREEDOM, Ya i don't have no common cents, but thats MY GOD GIVEN RIGHT no man or thing should be able to tell me i have to wear gear while riding. Me riding with shorts and no helmet is in no way shape or form hurtting anyone in on or around me , it is not destroying property! (the only one it could hurt is me. ) Now the person whipping out into my lane of traffic without looking,or slowing downYa i'm gonna look like a can of worms But thats my own @ss fault , woulda coulda shoulda.1982 XJ 1100

Common sense is common knowlege. You have it or you don't. If you do not know that what goes up must come down, if you do not understand action and reaction, if you do not understand that there are consequences of every action you take, then you do NOT have common sense. Besides, what you don't know won't hurt you, right? You are bulletproof and your armor is your ignorance.
This lack of common knowlege is easy to determine in everyone, but since everyone is entitled to whatever the heck they want, including suing your a** if you prohibit them from getting whatever the heck they want, there will never be such a discriminatory thing allowed as a test for common sense. It viloates the rights of the truly dumb who want to go through life just like the rest of us who paid attention when we were growing up. Hey, it's only fair...
Closing speed? Physics, right? Theory of Relativity, right? Laws of Conservation and Momemtum, right? Acceleration? Isn't that something they learned in school? Well I didn't have to learn that and I made it through school. All Daddy had to do was threaten to sue.
Turn signals? I know where I want to go. Just who are you to interfere with that? Besides, I care what you think because....
Hit me and I'll sue.

Society (Re: Government) does have the right to set standards to equalize things. As an example, you choose not to wear a helment and are seriously hurt who pays the medical bills if you have no insurance or your insurance money runs out? Is it fair for society (tax payers) to pick up your medical costs because you choose to exercise your freedoms? Where do you draw the line of responsibility? The bottom line always ends up with the $ sign. An interesting arguement can be made for both sides.

Looking at t he poll, I get sort of scared. I can remember the written test about 15 years ago in California. Someone had "updated" the questions, and didn't know the answers!!
If I had to ride in the manner they wanted me to, I would have been dead in a week. I just know the "common sense" questions would be written by some idiot working for the state, and only other idiots would get the answers!! can you say airhead blonde?Ray Matteis

Lets just go for all of it. No more coffee drinking, Outlaw Drive though Windows, No smoking, take out the radios and CD/MP players, Remove the passenger seat in the front and put in a limousine type wall between the driver and all passengers lest they talk. Make all driver's maintain logbooks like truck drivers to make sure the have adequate rest. Install computer test in all vehicles that rests for common sense and alertness and reaction timing that takes twenty minutes to complete before the computer will allow the engine to start. We should also make people justify their trip maybe mass transit would be a better use of resources and safer so you shouldn't be allowed to drive. I'm open to other suggestions I know I'm not smart enough to think of all the dangers and distractions out there. If we work at it hard enough the 3 people thay can still drive will be really safe.Russ Neal

Just to clear things up a little bit. I don't think it's taking away someones freedom by seeing if they have the ability to change a tire. #ell I was not allowed to drive until I could show my folks that I could change a tire, check the oil and demonstrate that I could pay attention to what's going on around me. Freedom to choose? When someone chooses not to pay attention then That draws me into the picture. On a two lane hyway, can you actually trust that the other person is not going to cross that line and take you out. Prime exaple. EX gov Bill Janklow. Took out a rider cauz he's in a big hurry. Blamed it on his diebeaties. I say hogwash. If he knows that he's got a condition that needs attention to every few hours, then why did he not pay attention to his condition. Then to top it off. He only gets 90 days time for killin someone and then tried to lobby himself out early. I say the guy's a putts. Now to the point. Driving is a PRIVILAGE not a right. Everyone has a right to ride a horse and or walk. But letting people drive that should not be driving is like letting stevie wonder have a drivers license. I agree. Cell phone use should not be allowed while driving and the hands free stuff is a joke. Any way. Now that I've vented a little bit, I feel much better. Who's bringing the beer to Bean Blossom? I'll bring a few cases of soda's, A truck, A guitar and lest we not forget The XS.S.R.Czekus

Another twist.
Freedom or right? What about the issue of drivers who smoke while they drive. Here is Southern California it can be a valid danger in the summer time. Look around the next time you stop at an intersection and see the amount of cigarette butts on the ground. I once had a guy flip his cigarette as he went into the store that landed on the hood of my car. As for common sense, if second hand smoke is as bad as they say it is-would that make someone smoking in their car with children present guilty of child abuse? Sounds like a potential lawsuit to me.
Big Pat
Ps. How do you smoke a cigarette on a motorcycle without a windscreen anyway?

Remember that just because someone knows the right answer doesn't mean they will act on it. We all know what speed limits are maybe they should say that you lose your privilege to drive for a year or so after the first ticket after all if you aren't aware enough to stay under the limit you obviously need to time to learn how to be aware. Maybe you could avoid the the suspension say if you installed governors on all you cars and got a conditional license to drive only those vehicles so modified. Hell we ought to have devices with transmitters installed in all cars that would report you to the police if you so much as inch over the speed limit.Russ Neal

privelage or right?
as far as insurance i always have it the LAW mandates it where i live. So now some @hole breaks the law and crashes into me,he has no insur. your darn tootin i'm sueing (provided i'm still alive,no helmet remember) so the therory of me costing you money for hospital bills is out the window,The @hole who chooses to break the law is costing you money not me, Now if i did break the rules or laws then yes i would be costing you money, sorry not the case ,as far as oil checking #ell i couldn't do that in half the new cars on the road today, they hide that lil stick so neatly under all that plastic all of it looks the same to me. As for tire chageing, come over to my place if you cant change the tire on my van you can't drive either (i've been with a 15lb sledge from behind the wheel ,driven it around corners squeeling tires with the luggs on by only a thread, had a torch on the center hub glowing red,,it won't budge) So does that count for the common cents test? Probly 75-80 percent of the women on the road don't have enough guts to break loose the lugs with those tiny lil lug wrenches they supply with cars,I still say Live hard RIDE FREE, and CAN'T WE ALL JUST GET ALONG1982 XJ 1100

He wen t to flip the butt and stopped when he saw me... (i was expecting it to come my way) . He held on to it till they were slowing down for a stop light then he dropped it to make sure it didnt come back at me... I WAS Shocked... so some kids these days still do have some brains left..... even though my two dont most times...lmao
