  • insurance and costs

On the Yahoo Board, there has been a lot of discussion on what people pay for insurance and what company they use. I thought we could use a thread like this here.

    I'll start:
I have just my 80 xs1100g insured through Geico. I am in South Florida which is a rather expensive area to insure motor vehicles. I am 39 and no tickets or accidents in many years with good credit rating.

Although maybe because they call the bike a 1980 YAMAHA EXCESS 110 -
    3H5000xxx

    BODILY INJURY LIABILITY $50,000/$100,000 N/A $42.00
    PROPERTY DAMAGE LIABILITY $25,000 N/A $22.00
    UNINSURED MOTORIST - NONSTACKED $10,000/$20,000 N/A $126.00
    Cycle Total: $190.00

I priced Progressive with the same limits. Only difference is with the limits I choose, they force me to get comp and collision. I chose highest deductibles.

Bodiy (sic) Injury and Guest Passenger $50,000 person/$100,000 accident $99.00
Property Damage Coverage $25,000 property damage $19.00 Uninsured/ Underinsured Motorists Bodily Injury Coverage $10,000
    person/$20,000 accident Unstacked $259.00
Medical Payments Coverage No coverage $0.00
Comprehensive Coverage $1000 deductible with Agreed Value 41.00
Collision Coverage $1000 deductible with Agreed Value $36.00
    Pay in full for $454.00.

Quote for progressive with same limits is $264 higher per 12 months.

If I lower limits to bare minimum:
Bodiy (sic) Injury and Guest Passenger $10,000 person/$20,000 accident $59.00
Property Damage Coverage $10,000 property damage $14.00 Comprehensive Coverage $1000 deductible with Agreed Value $41.00
Collision Coverage $1000 deductible with Agreed Value $36.00 Pay in full for $150.00.

Then it is $39 cheaper but a lot less coverage.

By the way, progressive rates you on your credit score as well. ut then again, so does Geico.

      OK, lemme see here....
The most basic package you can get here for the Eleven without anybonuses or discounts costs you about 700$.

But since my 78E is an old lady, she got a certificate of that fact, so I get a 90% off the insurance, so everything as before + additional rider insurance cost me 175$. More affordable. Yummie.

        Motorcycle Insurance

All of my bikes are insured with Nationwide Mutual Ins. Co. I'm 43 yrs old and I am the principal operator on all except the CX500. My wife is the principal operator of the CX and my wife is 40 ['hope she doesn't see this post!].
All bikes have just liability insurance and they have coverage for the "uninsured motorist". No coverage for the "under-insured motorists". All bikes have the lowest limits option available.
        All bikes have:
        Property Damage Liability: $10,000
        Bodily Injury Liability: $20,000/$40,000

        Uninsured Motorists:
        Bodily Injury: $20,000/$40,000
        Property Damage: $10,000

        Now, the yearly rates:
        '84 Honda Gold Wing Interstate = $150
        '80 XS1100-G = $150
        '82 Honda CX500 Custom = $99
These rates do include a "multi-car discount".

Guys, to do a decent comparison you have to check your policies against those of others in your state. I've had policies in Wisconsin, Orecon, Arizona and Colorado with the same comany, and paid different rates in all states.

Currently I am with Progressive, one of the few motorcycle insurance companies in Colorado unless you own your own home, which I do not at the present. Coverage is
Bodily Injury and Property Damage Liability (BI) $50K each perosn, 100K each accident
Propery damage liability 25K each accident
Annual policy premium - $85.00 No lay-up period, I am covered 12 months of the year.

No medical, as I am covered through work. Policy covers passengers but not Uninsured Motorists. UM coverage is optional in Colorado, may be mandatory in other states. Company who has the XJ insurance does not have my other vehicles, sometime there is a discount if you have home/car/bike with same company.

Check your policy for required/needed coverage but drop unneeded coverage if you can. Medical is an example; if you are already covered you don't need it on your bike insurance. Some policies include a lay-up provision, 1 - 2 months of the year, which can decrease your premium.

If you have a good agent, he/she can go over your policy and make recommendations. its worth doing every few years as state requirements change over time.

uninsured notorist is not mandatory in Florida by law. However due to how many uninsured/underinsured motorists there are in South Florida, I would rather have it.

I don't think the uninsured motorist on my car would cover me if I get hit by an uninsured driver. Paricularly because it is a different company.

Without it, my annual premium would only be $64 per year.

I have a 78E with Vetter fairing and bags. I'm 47 with a clean driving record. I pay $180 a year for liability and comprehensive on the bike. I can't remember the ammounts of coverage but it is around 3 to 4 times the minimum. It is with State Farm. I also insure both cars and my condo with them. It all is automaticaly deducted from my checking account monthly.

                    In 2000. I paid $75.00 a year liability on a Honda cb750k. In 2001 I bought my XS and paid $80.00 a year liability.
2002 went to $85.00 a year. Moved from Rapid City to Sioux Falls paid in 2003 $95.00 a year. Rented all this time. Bought a house and did the multi vehicle thing and 2004 paid $112.00 a year. Wonder what 2005 will be.
Oh. I almost forgot. I'm 39, a clean driving record. Ex truckdriver, no accedents and a credit score that's outta this world.

I had an accident while carrying a passenger a couple years ago. I was lucky I didn't get sued because I had the minimum insurance required by law in my state. It isn't much protection.

Now I have something like $500K/$500K/$500K. Liability only. I think I pay less than $500 anually and there is no lay-up clause. This for my two bikes. From some reason Progressive sees the XS1100 as high risk. One of my friends bought identical coverage from them for half the premium on a Kawasaki Concours.
