I am a real Dr. Jeckle and Mr. Hyde with respects to the XS/XJs. The Dr. J side of me likes to see the restoration and continuation of these classic cycles. The Mr. H side wants to graft new parts, make drastic changes and generally alter the bikes behavior and appearance.

Is there any interest in creating another category on this forum for custom XS/XJ discussions? Am I unique or are there others that would be interested in something like this? Or, is it best left in the Technical section? Opinions please.

I too blur the line between restoration, upgrade, and customization. That's why each of us need more than one XS.

I'd like to see what other people are doing to modify their machines too! I just can't leave mine stock......never could. I'd love to share ideas and pictures.

          Modifying XS's

I never stop messaging on the Ratbyk. I enjoy working on it and trying to make it as reliable and improving it's performance and appearance as much as possible within reason. Spending large amounts of cash is not in the equashion. Trying to keep it "stock" does not enter the picture. Because the bike will likely never be worth more than $1,500. no matter what is done just keeping it alive, starting well and pulling strong is all I expect from her/it whatever.
The sharing of tips along reliability/performance/appearance lines are a good thing.

I agree with the customization of these wonderful machines, just not sure if we really need an extra section, vs. just threads in the already existent forum? We've already posted tech tips and such on MOD's for one thing or another. Purists can have their OEM versions if they want them, but I think customizing gets them personalized to our individual desires and such!

But, hey, if you can get JP to add a Forum topic, go for it!

I have a stock 78E and plan to keep her in original condition. But, I have a parts bike that is begging me to start tinkering with it and I want to customize it. I met up with a guy who chopped his XS, fabbed up forward controls, nice paint job, fat rear skin and rear fender, risers and drag bars, staight pipe exhausts, and tossed any appurtenances that weren't necessary. It's pretty sweet! So, I agree Pat...you need more than one XS11! The trick is to get SWMBO on board about owning a stable of XS iron. I, too, would like to hear more from others so inclined. Could be good adds for this forum's Tech Tips / Modifications section. Keeping these machines alive, in whatever form, works for me.

                  Re: Custom Section

This section is the one I nearly always defalt to. It is not so busy this time of year that a new catagory is really needed. Heck, just start new subject threads.

I think the response to this thread speaks for it's self. The technical section is the best place to discuss, show off, and review custom stuff.

I don't think a stable of XSes is really required, but you gotta have two: one to ride, and one to stare at and tinker with and drink beer around and use to plan your own XSCoast Chopper. My second is a GPz 750, very XS-like, and it's only gone about three miles under its own power in the last three years. But someday, when I'm all done...

By the way, I'm retaining the rights to "XSCoast Chopper" for California rides in the future!
