I went to the local bike shops and tried wrecking yards without luck so 3 years ago i made my own lid from a concrete cast of the remaining lid that I had......took 2 or 3 days to make the mold (which I will be using again) then 2 weeks of sanding and painting the lid........so now I get to do it all again! This time there will be afixed hinge on the fronts of both bags or a cable to each lid (stainless wire).

one way to judge a bag is to find out how much beer it can carry.
My generic soft bags will store a 12 pack in each side.
My hard bag will carry 14 12 packs. It's bolted to the right-hand side of my XS11SG and has a 13" wheel on it's other side to hold it up. When not carrying beer there's room for a passenger.

My "hard bag" is a Spirit of America sidecar and it's not very big. We returned 28 Guinness 6-packs of empties in it when my younger son left home. That's with the tonneau snapped down and not using the space behind the seat.

Diamond Plate saddlebag UPDATE

Well,

The Diamond Plate toolbox saddlebag conversion is coming along! I got some advice from my machinist friend, in both how to cut them, and also how to weld them. Got some nice hacksaw style metal cutting blades for my jigsaw, ran thru it like butter!!!

I borrowed some scrap aluminum pieces from him to practice on, but they were actually quite thick, and relatively easy to work with. I had some left over diamond plate from the 6" I cut off of the box, and went to practicing on it! I have a fairly new Lincoln Pro-Mig 135, and using solid core aluminum wire, and 100% argon shielding gas, I was first burning thru it with just the "B" power setting, goes from A to D! Had to turn up the wire feed speed to 10....max, and that finally allowed me to make a proper bead without burning thru or leaving gaps, holes!

I've taken some prep pictures, and will take some more once I get this first one welded back together. It'll have a modest unsightly seam about 3/4" from the end of the box, due to the angled sealing lip on the base that I wanted to keep intact!

Thanks to Ken, I got the slimline locking latches 2 days after I ordered them, just picked up a rivet tool....that's fun to learn to use also.... tools, tools, tools, arrggh, arrggh, arrggh!!!!

I have an original set of Pacifico bags, (hinged lids, that don't fly-off) that I had to remove last year when some bored little punk decided to kick my bike over, onto my car.
Both bags cracked from the support frame flexing, but they are both repairable.

Now I use a set of Yamaha soft bags. I don't know what they were originally mounted on. I bought them on eBay.
They have nylon straps with quick releases that snap to the frame.
They are grey/silver, with a reflective strip on each side, that has the Yamaha emblem.
It was a three pc set; soft saddle bags and a nice big tank bag.

I have not seen another set like it. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

I have a set of the original Yamaha hard bags on my '79 Special, and also an aftermarket trunk box called "The Box" mounted on an OEM Yamaha rear rack. I bought the whole setup off of Ebay and, counting $50 to have them shipped in 2 large boxes, the whole deal set me back $160. The bike looks great with the hard bags and no trunk, so I only mount the trunk when I'm doing a long haul. I remounted it last night in 5 minutes for a trip I'm taking to Palm Springs tonight.

I picked up a set of some hard leather bags at a bike show/swap meet.....mostly made to fit a harley but I added an extra strip of leather between the two peices and the fit just fine on the 81xs1100,,,,,,,,,tend to sit just below the turn signal too close for my liking,but it works....and these babies can fit 14 beers in each side!!!! either way,was a great deal for $50,and the chrome buttons they have on them really help accentuate the black and chrome of the bike.
