  • City of Mist (new story)

Kind of mood piece...not sure if I got it or not.

    Feedback?

Good read Dan. I think I rode to work that same morning. Foggy and damp as hell. There aren't too many mornings that I don't ride in. I can attest that Four am DOES exist, I see it five days a week. It's surprising just how much traffic there is on Airport Freeway around 5 am, but it seems to be, if there IS such a thing, smarter traffic than the afternoon traffic. Nobody is exiting the freeway, and people tend to stay in the lane they are in. The left lane moves about 80 mph and the right one about 70. I have to be careful not to get run over, even in the right lane.
This area is just like one huge city, just with a downtown on each end. I have been here over fifteen years now, and I have seen a lot of changes myself. Especially in the area north and west of Ft.Worth. It seems like I have to drive for an hour, just to find a place to go for a ride.

Loved the story. I do that too. But it was cold the last time and I spent all my coffee money on gas.
OK, now I wanna go for a ride. Just turned 71.000 km on the meter. Wanna reset it to zero asap. The fun way.

PS: Danny, you've got mail. Found a gas tank you might wanna check out on german ebay.

            rainy day poem

Dan's story remined me of a poem I wrote sevral years ago:

            Rainy Day Cruise

I left my house to go to work
            Not long after 6:00 AM.
            The weather isn’t very good,
            Gray fog with drizzle damp.

So I must decide which way to go
Should I ride or take my cage?
I have 150 miles to go today
And the weatherman is not a sage.

At least the temperature is better
than it has been in days before.
And I think again of gas pump prices
Each gallon a few cents more.

So I grab my helmet and gloves and boots,
and head out through the door.
Clad in my yellow suit which (I hope)
will not fail me in downpour.

The morning light, diffused with fog,
            Discloses an episode
Chrome yellow suit on a bright red bike
            running down a rain-black road.

The fog and mist through morning light
yields a new perspective on the day
            Things I took for granted
don’t appear the same old way.

            The road itself is blacker,
trees and grass a muted green
            Landscapes fade into rolling hills
Homes and farm are ghostly scenes.

            I decide upon reflection
What the difference is to me
            Besides the change in colors
            And surrealistic scenery

For the essence of bike riding
            Is isolation within yourself
And the immediacy of the moment
            Is recognized above all else.

            I enjoy my morning’s travel
and get to work almost dry
except for the cuffs of my blue jeans
and my riding glove’s outer hide.

So if you ever have the chance,
and are well equipped to try,
Take a rainy day cruise for a change of pace
You will enjoy the change from dry.
