  • Demo rides: kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha

Last saturday I went to 2nd annual Bikefest at Copper Mountain, Colorado. Signed up to ride 3 bikes: Kawasaki Vulcan 1500 Classic, Yamaha Warrior, and Suzuki C90. The warrior is not really in the same class as the other 2, and drove like it, but my overall observation is one of vague disappointment. Every time I ride a V-Twin I am remided why I don't own one...vibration.

The Vulcan was the worst. Vibration even made reading the tank-mounted speedo difficult. (Plus, on all 3 bikes, I didn't like looking down that far to see the speedo and gauge cluster.) The Yamaha was better, had better roll on performance, but still after the 20 mile ride I could feel the vibration in my arms and seat. Not really impressed.

Best over-all was the Suzuki. Rated at 1492cc, it had the least vibration but shifting was noisier, though still smooth. Suspension seemed to work the best overall, though I would have cranked up the preload a bit to handle my 260 lbs. Brakes were excellent, best of the 3, both front and rear very smooth, positive and linear with excellent feel.

With a price range form about 9K and up, I didn't feel any of the 3 were that much better than my XJ. Clearly the lower seat heights, longer cruising range, floorboard and heel/toe shifter set-up, and better brakes(!) were things I could appreciate. The vibration, lack of a tachometer (up to $300 as an option) and tank-mounted gauge cluster were all drawbacks. Maybe I expected to much.

A bike I would like to ride but didn't have a chance was the new 2300cc Triumph tripple. One of the guys I went with (5 of us total) road one. Truly impressive he says, with something like 140 pounds-feet of torque generated at 1,500 rpm. Difficult to ride slowly. Its also faster than a Hyabusa. Price is right around 18K.

At any rate, I left the event (which also included AMA SuperCross races - interesting to watch) without a buring desire to get a new bike, at least none of the ones I rode. (Also tried out a Suzuki 4wd ATV. That was kind of a hoot.) had a good time, though, and was reminded once again how well the XS/XJ design has held up over the years.

Cost of admission for the day was $20.00, which included test rides and admission into the SuperCross. If you get a chance , attending one of these eventsis a good way to spend a Saturday or Sunday.

Well... the BMW I rode didn't quite measure up to the XS either... except the brakes.
If you are after something newer, check out the V4 range. And the valk.
There's the V-max, but I don't like the weakish frame (can be fixed), high fuel consumtion and small gas tank.
Personally I loved the VFR.... the best handling and even better torque range than the XS. Don't be fooled by "only" 750/800 ccm.
But that seems a bit off, due to your choices.
I like the v-twins.... they're fun... gotta have one again....

Actually I believe it is initially quicker than a Hayabusa rather than faster. Triumph claims 0-60 mph in 2.8 seconds while a stock Hayabusa is around 3.1 seconds. You are looking at torque of 147 ft/lbs @ 2500 rpm vs. 102 ft/lbs @ 7000 rpm for the Busa. The Rocket 3 has more torque at idle (68 ft/lbs) than most bikes develop maximum! I'd be interested in riding one.

I took advantage of an invitation to "British in the Blue Ridge" last month. It was a hoot. It was interesting to watch the hard core Triumph fans snub the Rocket 3. I must admit that the engine looks like it would be very much at home in a Farmall tractor!

As far as V twin vibration goes; ---what vibration? I commute on my XS650 every day. I guess it's all relative.

I believe each and every one of us should have as many motorcycles as we have pairs of shoes!

If you get a chance try the 2005 yamaha royal star tour deluxe, it is heavier than the XS but LB/HP should be close. My 97 rides nicer on the highway, but the XS is much snappier of the start line. The 2005 is quoted as 98 Hp, so yamaha fixed too small carbs.

                RS,

How long have you had the Royal Star and how do you like it? I find the Royal Star Venture appealing. I wish I could buy one.

I've tried all those bikes on and didn't care for any of them. Even tried on the new Kawi VN2000. Talk about an elephant of a bike. If your weak, you'de get pretty strong by owning one of these. They only weigh around 800 lbs. Most of that is top heavy. It also leans quite far on the kickstand.
The thing I like about my XS is it's versatile, From cruzer to bar hopper and in between, AND it's still sylish.

I haven't found anything I like better either. I've ridden several V-twins and don't like the vibes or the forward foot controls. I recently rode a Yamaha FJR-1300 and liked it except that my legs cooked from the engine heat and would have been cramped without an alternate place to put my feet. I also rode a Yamaha TDM and wasn't impressed with that one because it was too tall and had that BMW two cylinder feel to it. I guess I'm just stuck with my XS11 -- but that's not all that bad, is it?

The Rocket 3 engine does look like a tractor engine! Styling is important, I wouldn't want an ugly bike no matter how good it was. After detailing my bike I can just sit and admire it!
I've never been on a TDM but that it is supposed to be another cult bike.

                        Marty,

I got the royal star this year and really like it, and SWMBO loves it. Middle of the season the 2005 tour deluxe was announced, this is the same bike I have but with the venture intake that cranks the bike up to 98hp. I really wish I could justify 13 grand for another bike but cannot.
Been watching ebay for a damaged venture to strip to a tour deluxe clone and had my bike up for sale. Whatcha know, last weekend I have a guy coming with cash and a trailer to buy it, I drop the bike while he is driving up from Dayton. He was not into a scratch and dent sale. Oh, well now I have a slightly damaged tour deluxe to work on.
