    Nitrogen in tires for free for Costco members

    Supposedly, Costco is now offering to fill your tires with Nitrogen. Although I don't know if they are for sure doing this for motorcycles. I was told they change the valve stems too.

    From what I read, using Nitrogen is much better than regular air because you lose pressure much more slowly through rubber tires than with regular air. Also, tire pressure does not chage like with regular air as tire heats up giving you better wear on the tires.

    I added a link to some information about Nitrogen in tires. Apparently, this has been going in race car tires for years.

    Hey there Thumper,

    Well, after accessing my old high school science lessons in the far back reaches of my brain, and then confirming it with my trusty Encyclopedia, I remembered(the 1st two gases!) that regular atmosphere (AIR) is roughly 78% Nitrogen, 21% Oxygen, and the other 1% is ~(0.03% C02), and other stuff, Ozone, Methane, Hyrdogen, Helium, Argon, Neon, Krypton, Xenon, Radon, NOS, No2, and pollutants NOW!!!

    I didn't read the link, but I can still get my regular air for free. If I have to pay for this Nitrogen, I'll pass!! Call me cheap!

      Actually, the Nitrogen is free, for Costco members. I for sure would not pay for it either. NOt with how much I have been putting into bike repairs.

      And I also believe that you are correct on your breakdown of atmospheric air. I only know because I read it today as well.

      Also, air you get from an air pump (atmospheric air) has moisture and will expand and contract when heated and cooled. The Nitrogen which is an inert gas is pumped into the tire after the atmospheric air has been scrubbed or filtered of all moisture and other gasses.

      That is why they use Nitrogen in tires for auto racing because the dry nitrogen does not affect the PSI as much in tires nor does it leak through permeation of the rubber as atmospheric air does. They also use Nitrogen in airplane tires too.

      Also from what I understand, using dried atmospheric air causes problem sith the belts in tires which is why that is not usually used. AFrom what I also understand, pumping dried Nitrogen is just a cheap to do as pumping dry air.

      What I would like to know is, has anyone done this before or knows more about it then what I read today.

        In my tours and travels of being a military, heavy junk mechanic, I can say that Nitrogen is the best thing for your tires. You are right about the less expansion when they heat up. But you do have an inconvienience when adjusting pressures to suit different loads, altitudes, type of driving/riding, and the availability of nitrogen. Costco is very popular in California, but here in S.D. good luck cuz there aint any. There is an airport but I think your gonna have fun going to a shop and askin for nitro for your tires. All in all, the best thing is regular air. Less hassel, and your going to were out the tire before the inside starts to rot away. Now if your gonna store it for a very very long time. Nitro is deffinetly the way to go. wrap the tires in plastic and block up the bike Put a note on it saying don't open till the great, great, great,grand kids have grandkids.

                  Nitrogen

                  I used Nitrogen in the tires of a Vett that we won the Trans Am championship with in 1975. John Greenwood was the driver, Rudy Braun the car owner/sponsor and I was chief mechanic/team manager. Nitrogen "Works" Also used in all our air guns etc. We used it just like compressed air around the pits. We use to take 2 bottles to every race.
