    Dan,

Does my heart good to see that sleeplessness is not just for us on the east coast. But I don't put out books while waiting for the sun to rise. You have done a great job on this series of articles.

Have you found sponsorship or a publishing company to work with yet? Your first ones were self published right? This one should sell to a publisher.

    Keep up the good work.

One thing I find interesting. Based on your current writings are present day and non-fiction, why am I not hearing anything about these fires you are reporting about? Is it not a big news story? Being in Florida, I know I am far awaw from this.

Looking at some of the writings, it looks like some of this took place about a month ago. Still, I don't recall hearing of the fires.

It's not such a news worthy item when it doesn't affect many people.

              thumperjsa:
They do not even fight these fires for the most part unless they are threatening structures or towns. You've got to understand the scale of this place....I literally drove for 1000+ miles (from Watson Lake, YKT to Fairbanks, AL) in smoke so thick you could see your headlight beams.

There were massive fires all over the Yukon and Alaska. The scale will throw you off though....a fire could burn for 1000 miles and never get near a house, person, or even a road. All the fires that I got near enough to need information about were started by lightning. Most of them didn't even exist when I left for my trip on June 18.

This happens to some degree every year...there are old burns that you drive through all along the road and signs (usually) that tell you what year they were...it is actually interesting to see the recovery the forest makes and how long that takes.

This was a really bad year however...dryer and hotter than normal (according to them...I was cold most of the trip).

It makes the news up there....Fairbanks news was constantly talking about them when I was there, and Tok was having 3 times daily town meetings for the latest information...but I get the impression that not much that goes on up there gets reported "down in the states".

Some internet searching will find plenty of information about the fires.

Hey jetmechmarty, great site! Wish the maps file size wasn't so big, but they really illustrate just how much area this can cover...and how fast!
