  • Many Thanks to ALL OF YOU!!

I recently adopted (purchased) a 1980 XS Eleven G with 27,000 miles. I am happy to say E-Bay worked for me. I went to pick up my new bike, XS Eleven?? Looks big and mean, just what I need to intimidate me and keep me in check because of the horse power (have visited the emergency room for various fractures toooo many times).
I visited the drop location and met my new bike. Seems the shop was commissioned to perform service work for the PO. Some carb work (can you believe it?). The shop stated they were not able to complete the carb tune because #1 was giving them trouble and now for some reason so was #4 (did someone say pick up coil wires?).
The next day they claimed it was ready to go. I picked up my $720.00 splurge and rode it home. I have owned a motorcycle, or two, since I was eleven (it's destiny) and now I am forty.
My "new" bike seemed okay on my initial 24 mile (thus the reason for my bid) drive home.
Since bikes are in my blood and I am mechanically inclined, the disease, that is now my XS, set in. I disappeared from my main living quarters and took up residence in my garage with Big Blue (PO named it... bikes are like boats. Don't change the name or you will meet asphalt). I should mention I am a motor vehicle enthusiast, licensed physical damage appraiser, former auto body repair technician, and ASE certified mechanic. That being said, I believe in a as close to factory look mentality. It works for me. So, someday Big Blue will someday again be gray and silver.
Several months later and new tires, pick up coil wire repairs, ignition coil surgery, "new" carb body replacement - love that E-bay - to repair a broken float post or two, (did I mention the shop butched my carbs?), too many hours of cleaning, two tubes of Rub N Buff, three carb cleanings, which is how I realized my carb woes, new pegs , levers, fuse box repairs, brake pads, new front master parts,

    I LOVE THE RIDE!!!!

This thing screams and stands up! My exhaust is still damaged (scraped and small crack) and my headlamp and bucket slightly damaged from the PO laying it down (he even gave me replacement signals, what a nice guy) but the ride is impressive, to say the least.
The reason for my lengthy lavish over my "new" XS is this....

I need to thank everyone who has posted to this wonderful site. I was able to keep another XS on the road. Without this site, I would not have known about many of the items listed above! The damn shop - BUTCHERS - was chasing carb issues when 1 and 4 were not firing consistently, pick up coil wires. So, simple when you have the resources. Therefore, I apologize if this is not posted in the correct fashion, but I needed to thank all of you wonderful people who have taken the time to help keep these beasts up and running.

It has been three years since I have had it and I am still happy.

Just finished putting her back to the scheme pictured on the 80G, here in the picture gallery.

I have read so many articles about drilling out the airbox and count not resist any longer. Absolutely do not regret that. WOW.

Take a look at my homepage image of what the PO sold me, and after days of cleaning....

I will update my homepage image shortly so you can see the new paint...

Pretty nice even with the old paint, looks like you did a lot of cleaning and polishing. Are you sure it is actually an '80 G? It has the solid rotors you would expect to see on a '79 F. Are there two fuel "T"s between 1-2 and 3-4, or only one between each pair?

          'Agree with Ken"

I would have been perfectly happy if my bike looked like that. (which it doesn't)
But, you're the guy with the paint gun and the experience, I'm not!
Yup... waiting to see the new colors.

One t between each pair. I have the complete lineage and clean title with history. One benefit of having freinds in the MV Department.

            It is a 80G.

              Corrected Post

One t between each pair. I have the complete lineage and clean title with history and numbers of frame and engine match, so the year is known. One benefit of having friends in the MV Department.

It is a 80G but possible PO also swapped out for solid rotors. It was laid down on RT side and I had to replace front master and headlamp. I also had to bear the look of the damaged and cracked exhaust on the RT side. After re-welding the exhaust at the factory seams, could not have split in a better place, I no longer melt my RT shoe.

As I said earlier, I just drilled out my air box last night and I simply cannot remove the smile from my face. I will get my images up tomorrow. Please let me know what you think.

I may be able to help a limited amount of XS-ers with some paint assistance. It will be limited to enthusiasts and the XS obsessed only and those who have made a serious contribution to the preservation and restoration of the XS. This will be my way of paying back this great XS community for all of the information I have learned and have been able to apply to keep my beast on the road. That is why it will be limited to those who have contributed selfishly and professionally. More to come on that.

                It has the solid rotors

                80G's have solid rotors.
                80 specials got the slots

See that the wheels got painted too.
                Still a good looking bike
