The rack/backrest that came with my E was adjustable to accomodate the driver. It never came forward far enough for me to lean against. On trips I lean bak on the sleeping bag (or passenger)

I, too, built one for mine, but it was only for the passenger. My 81 has the thicker flatter shaped grab rail, and I drilled holes thru it to mount brackets and square tubing that I mounted a backrest pad onto. I got the vinyl fabric from Walmart, Foam from mattress or Arts/crafts store, used piece of wood for support, hot glued the pad/cover together and screwed it to the metal support! And now that I have a welding machine, I could probably do something even better, even with some round tubing to allow it to slide to adjust to either my back or passenger!
Good Luck.

I have a travelcade style seat and a backrest that slides into the rear carrier. Like Pat says. it doesn't slide out far enough for me to use it when I'm solo. I think I might try to rig up an extension out of a couple different sizes of tubing so that it will move farther forward.
