    Hey there Goodoleboy,

If you can't get there till Monday, and you have plenty of paper and ink for your printer, then go to the following link:
    Yamaha Parts Catalog

Click on the "ONLINE PARTS CATALOG" box in the left blue collumn, In next window, under CATALOGS, click on drop down menu, and select Motorcycles, then wait, when the list of years pops up on the left side, then click on 1979, then on XS1100SF, and then click on each subheading, and wait, then you'll see a diagram in the window on the right, then start printing until you get all the sections done, you can then use this as a guide for recognizing parts when they are not on the bike.

I, too, had only basic skills working on cars doing basic tuneups, and maintainance stuff, also 1 high school auto shop class, and then a rebuild of an old V-8, but never experience with these sophisticated bike engines. I had parked mine for over 8 years due to a bad 1st and 2nd gear problem, learned how to fix it from these pages and links without having to totally tear apart the engine. I did have to do a top end job, new pistons and rings, but was able to accomplish it myself, aside from the machining work! You can do it, and we are all here to help you in anyway you need!!!! NOW GO GET THAT BIKE!!!!!!

      You guys are amazing

You know I have got to say, I was a bit timid in joining this group and posting since I am such a novice when it comes to motorcycle mechanicing. I also wasn't sure what type of "crowd" I might run into with an online group like this. You guys have really impressed me! Lighting fast replies and offers to help are really appreciated as is the advice and personal stories of similar dillemas.

My Dad has an identical bike to mine. His is in worse shape as far as the chrome goes, but still fairly low miles and such. His was also at this shop and I retrieved it yesterday since it was still in one piece. My Dad had pretty much convinced me that both of these bikes are probably lost causes and I ought to throw in the towel. Now I have renewed hope and a source of information!!!!

      THANKS TO YOU ALL!!!!!!

If your dad want's to throw in the towell, See if he'll give you his. Two IS always better then one. I wish I had two XS's that way I could tear one done while still able to ride. Don't want to pay to much. Mabee next year. Funds are just about gone for this year.
Back to the point. You can get one running good and ride while you fix one totally, Then ride the fixed one and tear into the other either stock or custom or whatever.

Your ongoing grief-bomb with this shop really touched a nerve with a lot of this forum's contributors. A shop that does biz like this can't be around too much longer- go get 'em.[The bikes I mean- ]

              Update on the Saga

Well here is the latest update on my ongoing saga of me, my 1100 and the shop from hell.....

I retrieved my bike today from the HIGHLY questionable shop. It took 45 min. for this guy to find all the parts and pieces. Then I am looking at the carb assembly and he says "well there you go, that's everything". I looked at the boxes and realized I was missing the intake box assembly. I pointed this out to the guy and he tried to tell me I was full of crap and there were just the rubber boots that he had thrown out. I produced the exploded diagram from the website (that you guys directed me to...THANKYOU!!!!) and said, "ok then explain to me where these parts are" The guy kind of had to shut up then and go rummage around some more. He finally produced all the parts (as near as I can tell) and I got the hell out of there. This guy is really trouble.

Anyway, so then I marched right on down to the Yamaha dealer with the parts lists and asked for all the tune up parts required for the XS. Guess what? They were all available and will be here next week. I got a manual while I was there and the Yamaha carb cleaner I read about here and I am ready to start learning to be a bike mechanic. Imagine.... the shop had my bike torn down for two months and couldn't do anything because they could'nt find parts and I had them all in 15 minutes at the Yamaha dealer..... Furthermore, the shop had told me that my tank was trashed and they were looking for a new one because of all the goo in my tank. I got the parts home and decided to look for myself in the tank and guess what? The gasket on the lid of the tank was stuck to the mouth of the tank. The lid hadn't even been opened since I last opened it 18 years ago!! The inside of the tank is nearly spotless.... Anyway here is the best part....

As I told you all in the beginning, we paid in advance for the work to be done (I know, big no no....) Nevertheless, my Dad actually paid for the work as kind of a surprise for me since money has been a bit tight. He paid with a credit card and when he called the credit card company yesterday to tell them about the problems we were having, they credited his bill back for the $600.00!!! So now I have the bike (in pieces, but back anyway) and the money too. I consider myself very lucky. So as the parts come in and I start getting this baby whipped into shape, I may have some questions for all of you. Thanks again for your help thus far.

                    glad to hear

glad to hear you got your bikes back. if you're dad's is still in one piece, then you have something to go by to put yours back together. was surprised to hear that yamaha still had parts. there are other places on the web to order parts from. if in doubt, post on here and we will inform you of where to find parts. ebay is a good source of new & used parts. but it is "buyer beware". again, if you have any questions don't hesitate to post on the forum. once again, glad to hear you got your bikes and money BOTH back. most of us aren't that lucky. better go buy your lottery ticket! keep us posted, keep asking questions.

                      It just keeps getting better

I had to let you all know that a friend of mine went by the shop in question and there were two cop cars there talking to the guy. I have also found out that there are at least two lawsuits pending against the guy from the Yamaha dealer. One guy apparently gave him $16,000 up front for working on a boat of some kind and surprisingly the guy never did what he was supposed to do!

One of the stories the guy told me was that the fuel tank was so full of crud that it would be easier to replace the tank than to clean it up. Sounded reasonable to me. I got the parts back home and went to look inside the tank but my key wouldn't open it. The I realized that I was unlocking it alright, but the cap was stuck to the lip of the tank! I pried the gasket loose from the lip of the tank and looked inside. Guess what? The tank is pristine inside Only a couple of small surface rust spots, otherwise it looks great! This guy never even looked inside the tank!!!!

Well, pardon me while I run not walk to the local lottery store!!!!

                        Get Out of Town

I think the guy better get out of town before people start beating on him severally with baseball bats or something. He must have had some talents to start with. I wonder what dragged him down? Drugs-divorce? Who knows.

I have a Clymers I picked up the other day from the Yamaha shop here in Vancouver, so at least for the moment I think I am set as far as the manual goes. My dad has done some car painting and has the set up for doing it so even as I type this, my tank, fenders, and side covers are all getting a new paint job. Same basic paint job as what the bike had originally of black with gold flake but with a bit more gold this time. The chrome on the fenders was beyond saving so I decided to just paint them and be done with it.

I will probably start tearing into the carbs in the next week or so. Any "gotchas" that you or anybody else has from experience of rebuilding the carbs and fuel system would be greatly appreciated.
