Acquiring a title for a older motorcycle

I bought a 1978 Yamaha xs750 from a guy awhile back, I didn't get the title from him when I bought it. He had bought it from some other guy a couple of years ago, and he doesn't remember who the guy was. I got the bike running and now want to title it. Has anyone used international title service? Their website is
www.its-titles.com. They want $75.00 to get me a title. Basically I sell the bike to them on paper, then they sell it back to me, on paper, send me a certificate of title, and a bill of sale. This company is located in Las Vegas, Nevada. I'm located in Kansas. If there is any other company's out there that anyone has used please let me know. Thanks

Try looking up the serial number at the local DMV and if they can't locate the previous regestered owner, then that $75 may be a bargin for getting it back on the road.

Toolmaan, if you use this service, please let us know if it works. I have a 78E I may title here in NC and the $75. fee looks good. I was told I could title my 78 if I purchased a $250. insurance policy of some kind in case it had been stolen. I did not get all the details at the time cause I have a lot of work to do to get it on the road.
Your website deal could be a little risky if these folks are not reputable. Maybe someone on the list has had experience with them.

By looking at that report it sounds like they aren't too bad of a company. I think I will send my info in and see what happens. I'll let you know how it turns out. Thanks again.

to get a title here in Tx cost me $10 total and a little road time driving (10 miles) to get the last registered owner to sign the paper work.

Hey Toolmann,

Years ago I built a motorcycle and managed to get an assembled title for it here in Kansas. I had welded together my own frame design for it so it had no real serial number on it. If I remember correctly, when I applied for the title at the Reno County Courthouse, the Tag folks there had me bring in at least one noterized signed Bill of Sale for the purchase of the motor with a valid serial number listed to use as a vin number for the bike title. Then they sent out a state inspector from Topeka from the DMV to see to it that the bike meet all of the requirements like turn signals, brakes etc. and to verify that the engine serial number was correct. You may want to call the tag department at the Harvey County Courthouse and see if it is still possible to get an assembled title today. Now days they may have you take it to the closest KS Hwy Patrol office to inspect it like they do if you bring in a vehicle from out of state to register it in Kansas. It's worth a try before you dish out that much money to a company.

I bought a POS from up in N.J. without a title and sent all the paperwork to the outfit in Vegas. Just received the paperwork back so now I can put this little 81 special back on the road. I had no problem and thought the price was worth it.

By the way I went to school in Newton back in 1946 and my Dad was busted for boot legging there. More information than you ever wanted to know?

Toolmaan here is something that works in the state I live in,it might work in your state.See if you can find a old registation card for your bike.Most registation cards have the title number so that way you could apply for a lost title for your bike.Hope this helps.

Frame Swap?

Well I tried to go through www.its-titles.com, but they couldn't help me out. Kansas has some tough laws on applying for a title if it was never regestered in your name. And since it was never regestered in Kansas it just added to the problem. I have a new idea. I found a guy on Ebay that has a 1979 xs750 special frame with a good title. My question is would all the parts off of my 1978 xs750e work on a 1979 xs750 special frame? What is the difference between a special and a E model? I went to a Yamaha Triples website and they said the differences were mainly cosmetic. I was wondering if anyone else has ever tried that swap, or know if they would be the same? Thanks for any help.

I bet that might just work ToolMan. I owned a 78 Special and as I recall the rear tire was as tall as on the regular models. If you can find a site like ours that list the tire specs, you could confirm this. Engine should be identical too. I believe that only the exhast pipes were longer then on the specials. Also different side covers, tank and fenders as I recall.

Try this:copy the serial numbers off both the engine and frame and then apply for a lost title.Worth a try.

My 1980 XS 1100 LG has been sitting in a garage since 1986, the guy never got a title for it because the previous owner moved away, and he could not find him. Finally this year he wanted to get rid of the bike, tired of looking at it I guess. The bike was almost complete, missing headlight, turn signals and horns. Needed new tires and a battery. The bike has only 5000 miles on it. I was lucky enough to see the ad in the paper that he was giving the bike away for free!!
By now the bike is almost completed and ready for the road. Anyway, I used International Title Service, and after 7 days I got the paperwork back, cost me $75, I took the paperwork to DOL, and got the title, plates and registration for another $100, a great deal I must say. So I am very happy with the service of International Title Service.
