The numbers will be just as bad, 79,000 out of 331,000,000 Americans have it. That's something like 00.0002% infected and it was enough to cripple some hospital systems. Everyone is at risk, everyone can get this, there are two groups: high risk and everyone else.

Normal is gone, open the states too soon and people die, a lot of them. For nothing.

Reality is this has become the new norm for the time being and therefore there's not any shock value in talking about it on TV with the same seriousness.

Colorado did a bit of opening on May 1st. We will see after next weekend if cases start to rise.

Interesting that in Castle Rock Colorado a cafe opened up and was full on mother's Day and the state revoked their license to do business for 30 days. Another similar place opened in Greeley Colorado and they were not shut down. It's all about the local government and authorities as to whether they want to do anything. The state has guidelines and mandates but if the local governments won't enforce it then some will be able to open and others will be punished for it.

Can't wait to see how these conflicting precedents get worked out.

Some of the locals here are turning into control freaks and power tripping.

When I went shopping, the cashier got angry with me about what and how I put things on the belt for checkout.
After getting berated for the third time like an unruly child and ordered around like I missed something that everyone else already knew, I asked where these rules were posted and I was informed that they were on a sign posted in the entrance to the store.

I was two seconds away from leaving everything and walking out but I figured I should look for the sign before I got stupid and had the same problem at another store.

I walked over to the controlled entrance/exit and found the signboard after paying for my groceries but I also discovered that the only rule posted on it was that the cashier was responsible for frequently cleaning and sanitizing the checkout stand, there was almost nothing at all about the customers except wearing a mask at all times in the store and limiting purchases to two packages of beef, pork, and chicken.

I'll be shopping at a different store on the next grocery run.

Those poor folks don't have any control in their life that's a lot of reason they're doing what they do. Then they are given a sliver of control and they become overbearing since they've never had control.

Good choice, find another store. Also contact that store or regional manager and let them know of your experience.

One of my oldest friends from high school has cancer and is on chemo, radiation, and immuno-suppressants so he can't even look at a slice of moldy bread without killing himself.
Next month, we're planning to take Amtrak up north to Vancouver, WA, to see another old friend before we part ways and he shuffles up to Buffalo.


The odd part with the cashier was that after trying to rain on my day the cashier didn't even wipe down and sanitize the checkout stand, the only part of the rules I did find on the signs.
The impression I got was that there were multiple employee meetings and policy was set but never made it to the public lists posted for the customers.

I suppose I could have talked to the manager, then called corporate and thoroughly enphallused the cashier but it didn't seem worth it.

Pettifoggery was close to the same when we had the mandatory water restrictions during the drought and suddenly our waiters and waitresses were working the top of the water supply.
The local water companies were hot on their heels with little company rat-mobiles and company rats driving them around town making lists and ratting out people to the authorities for breaking the water rules.

61000 deaths in usa from colds and flu last year and we shutdown the country over one new strain of over 200 flu viruses that affect humans?? We have lost our minds, or politics?

Yep, we have lost our minds and the Barney Fifes and the Wyatt Earps have crawled out from under their rocks.
More people die each year from tooth decay so wash your hands and brush your teeth.

Now they're offering to give us a couple of trillion of our own money to make up for it.

While the true mortality of COVID-19 will take some time to fully understand, the data we have so far indicate that the crude mortality ratio (the number of reported deaths divided by the reported cases) is between 3-4%, the infection mortality rate (the number of reported deaths divided by the number of infections) will be lower.

For seasonal influenza, mortality is usually well below 0.1%.

It is likely that once we understand properly the asymptomatic population (with more testing!) this number will be lower.

I'm having a slightly different perspective living in China and middle of this.
WuHan lockdown was brutal but the effects were really clear here in Shenzhen (near HK border). We had couple of hundred's cases in Shenzhen and life is normal for weeks now, besides traveling to and from China.

If Wuhan would have started the lockdown a week and a half before it is highly probable that we wouldn't have this discussion at all. It could have been contained in Wuhan and some other minor cases with direct access.

It was just the start of the Lunar New Year (also called Chinese New Year). People travel back to hometowns and holidays and this travel starts some weeks before the actual festival with farewell parties before going and on arrival with their families. Optimal case to allow maximum spread.

Once it jumped to another countries similar treatment would have been needed...test and quarantine and rinse and repeat until contained. But we have pretty much lost that opportunity already,
