    Smile gears
    Hey All,
I've been away from the site for sometime. Life throws some big changes your way and it takes a little while to adjust and move on. I'm sure everyone here can relate. It's life. Any way what I really want to get to is this I have both a 79 and 81 Special and I want to do the second gear fix on them. Does anyone have at least the second gears available. I'd like to have the gears on hand to compensate for whatever learning curve I may have. Seems like it's slim pickings, but I thought I'd ask.

Don't buy the above transmission gears, that is the main shaft, you need the countershaft gears. Try member andreashweiss for what you need. Send him a PM.

Yup, there's plenty of those main shaft gears around, the engine cases need to be split to access those. You will probably also need 5th gear too, it meshes with 2nd.

                  2nd gear

                  Hi,

I just want to say that for years I thought I just couldn't shift properly. From day one I had trouble sticking 2nd gear. Caused a lot of embarrassing moments, laughs from other riders. I got to the point that to get 2nd I had to be overly aggressive when going for second. Worked most of the time, not all.
After getting on this sight in 2007 and hearing about the gear problem. It certainly helped my self esteem. What really bothered me was I didn't have this problem on other bikes I've had. This info alone makes this site worth it. However, I've learned so much more, that other wise I may have had to get a different bike. Because of the help from the members here I did get another bike a 79SF.

                    Sure that's your problem?

Just to be clear, the typical failure mode is the transmission slipping, not a difficulty shifting. The problem happens when you apply full throttle and the transmission slips out of gear violently and makes a loud ratchet sound.

It would be odd if both your bikes had a second gear failure, especially considering that the first gear failure is probably more common.

If your problem is getting into second gear, it might be possible it is caused by linkage, shift forks, or shift drum.

                      Trans fix

I bought an 81 with skipping 2nd gear just so I could try fixing it. Andreas sold me a good trans but everyone included Andreas told me to do the trans fix on this good trans to be ahead of the game/problem that may show up later.
I did the dremel fix and though I sold the bike to this day it's still working fine.
What I noted is contrary to most of our feelings about the dremel fix. That little barrel stone cut right through the gears as if there was no surface tempering ever done at the factory.
In contrast tried the stone on the front fender to elongate the bolt holes in order to drop the fender down a bit, I wanted it closer to the tire a little. I know the front fender has a built in spring steel brace and it was much much more work to get metal removed from this brace than it was from the gears.
What's that say about the tempering of the trans gears ?

                        gears

Totally understand. It has always been the gear not engaging and slipping so you get the ringdingdingding of missing a gear. shifting aggressively was the only solution I could think of at the time even then it didn't always work. I didn"t know as much about this bike then as I do now. I thought maybe I was getting lazy between 1st and 2nd or it just needed a firm shift to set that gear so to speak. Still learning and I'm thankful for the people on here that know more than I do.

                          2nd gear

I think the skipping starts when the dogs get rounded caused both by lazy shifting and power shifting and missing 2nd only to grind/skip a little with having to pass neutral on the way to 2nd ? Maybe !
Each miss causing just a bit of wear on the dogs and slots until final failure.
                          Or just running 95hp ? ? ?
I missed 2nd with my new SF but learned soon enough.
I sold it with 56K on it in 85 working fine. From there the new owner made one trip from Milwaukee to Mexico and two tours around the great lakes.
Then the new owner came to me complaining second gear went out. I told him I'd seen and heard him power shifting the bike. Later he was back complaining fourth gear went out. He rode it years with only 1st, 3rd, 4th. No idea how many miles by then.
