    Greetings,
I thought I was going to lose my mind, My primary 11 (Marie Marie) has been giving me fits for months now and I couldn't figure it out ,sometimes it would start but only if I crossed the lugs on the solenoid,at other times it wouldn't start at all,I replaced the solenoid and the problem remained, After much frustration I decided to take one step at a time to TRY to determine what the problem was.So I replaced the fuse block block(blade style) with a new one, no change...Next I checked the right handlebar switch, no improvement...I checked the pulser coil wires, no improvement, checked the tci unit, no improvement,I replaced the ignition switch, no improvement, checked all of my electrical connections(I thought)no improvement, Along the way I repeatedly drained the battery so I decided to jump it off of my truck, It roared to life and I took it around the block a few times and it was running kind of ragged so I checked the spark plug caps and wires and one of the caps wasn't making good contact so i replaced that and decided to take a short ride. I got about five miles from home and all of a sudden it died, I was going about 35 mph and hoped it maybe had blown a fuse, all of the dash lights were on and it had not started sputtering so I thought it might be an easy fix....WRONG AGAIN!!!I walked home got the truck, loaded that heavy monster by myself and took it home , I got it start again but as soon as it did it would die I pulled the gas tank thinking maybe the tipover switch might be defective, I had already eliminated that so I looked down at the ballast resistor wires and thought MAYBE something was amiss there and sure enough the wires were NOT making good contact, I replaced the connectors and FINALLY got tho problem solved. The moral of the story is DON'T GIVE UP and check EVERYTHING !!

Is that the one that died for no apparent reason at the rally 2 or 3 years ago?

        Yes it is

Yes Greg, the same bike, as you might remember the hazard flasher relay was dented on its top and it was shorting internally.

Get some 3 ohm coils from an 81 or an XJ and eliminate the ballast resistor completely. Ol' Okie has been that way for years.
