I just found a new 1979 XS1100 special tank!!!! Still in the box from Yamaha for the last 38 years. Lol what a find, still has seals on all the holes. Totally scratch, rust and dent free! Black with the gold flake. Gotta wonder what that’s worth......it’s not for sale.

A new 79 SF tank is worth about $300, that said it's actually, really, positively priceless !

I don’t know. I was just thinking what it would cost to find a good one, a liner, bondo, rust, paint.....and would it ever be as nice as that stock paint with the metal flake? I’m thinking it would have cost me much more.

Good score. Now clean up the rest of the bike so it does not look out of place Priceless now so look after it.

My thoughts exactly. And even if you were willing to pay how would you find one. I got really lucky and after the guy and I talked xs11’s for a while he was happy I got it. Very laid back and cool XS11 lover. Said it was the best bike ever made, got his new in 79, then got hit at a red light....when he fixed it he never used the tank. Been sitting in the box on the shelf ever since! He just opened it before he shipped it to check it out.

You’ll have to wait. It came out of the box long enough to inspect it and went back in. It’s out in the shop now ......,back in the box! Lol. I couldn’t even take a nap with it setting on the counter for fear that it would get knocked off and mashed in some way. Believe me, it’s beautiful with only the dust from shipping on it. I’m honestly thinking it needs to stay there until everything else is done on the bike and it’s time to place it on. I wouldn’t be able to live with dropping a wrench on it or something. Trust that it will look just like this one after assembly, washing and wax!

Rub it in.
My 79 Special gets more rusty every day. The new cheap rear shocks are puking oil. The Seal All on the bottom of the tank will fail some day. The pipes are rusty and getting holes. The OD has quit working.
BUT: Yami runs great, AND, I have a spare tank.

Edit. Had to add. My 81 Standard is in as new condition.
