Well I’m getting some things done on the bike, maybe not much for a real mechanic, but I’m getting there. I finally found a good 140 mph speedometer. The rim was a little marked up and faded so I sanded it in prep to paint it and found a nice silver underneath....so I just wet sanded and polished them both. I think they came out pretty nice. Oh yeah and I ordered two new gaskets from partzilla because they looked so good I didn’t want to trash things up with crappy gaskets.....I ended up spending more for gaskets than I did on my gauges! Lol. Got all my electronics sorted out and working.....when I put the battery in and turned the key I blew 3 out of four fuses on my entirety replaced electrical system! It took a few weeks wanting to blow the thing up but I finally found my problems. Fortunately it was all failed electronics and a grounded out wire but it took checking just about everything to figure out.....I was so close to ripping into the wire harness because I was sure I must have botched up the installation of my new fuse box. Good thing I didn’t, no problems there.
My petcocks and octopus are all polished and rebuilt, new fuel lines all over, carbs are in and it’s purring along at a nice just over 1000 rpm idle. The valves sound great. I took a video but I haven’t figured out how to get my new photo host to post it yet.....says my file is not supported?
Now back to trying to get a seat I love......let’s see, I think I’m on attempt #3 but I’m not moving forward until I’m really happy with it. I have the small seat pan from my wreck...(little eBay cafe racer seat)..I’m going to try and mount the stock foam and cover on it and make a thinner, shorter version of a 79 special seat before I give up and order another Harley solo seat like the orange bomber had on it. Once I finally put an end to my seat saga I can finish the rear end and get this thing done! All it needs is my new mufflers welded on and this seat area cleaned up and I should be good to go!
I haven’t put my new tank on yet and won’t until I’m totally finished, but I did take a pic. Oh yeah I got some new foam grips and a headlight too.
I also ended up trying a drive shaft boot from a maxim 700 cuz it was like new and only $7....it seemed to fit just fine but was a little longer than the stock unit...like one more rib. Anyway I tore the swing arm apart again and put that on too.

Well, it looks like it’s failed seat #3.....my new cafe racer seat is too dam small! Too short and not wide enough also feels like I’m sitting on a bag of rocks! But I guess that’s ok. I regretted ordering it the second I hit the pay now button. It’s what every hack is doing now anyway, and I never like what’s popular. In the words of a very wise man....”it was only 30 bucs!” Lol.
I know what I should have done last time, only I didn’t want to spend the $150 to do it right....now the $150 will be $180!

It’s one of those cut the frame and weld it in hoops that you see on eBay....my son grabbed it for me for Christmas.....I have a little different plan for it....just put an offer in on a seat like my orange bobber had that’s a little wider in the front.....if I can just get a seat I love we’ll be finishing this thing....I’ve got the plan in my head, fender, brake light, exhaust and all......just need the right seat, and I’m not moving forward until I find it! And that perfect black 79 tank is going to sit on the shelf until everything else is done.

Ok, the next two seat options and what I think I’m going to do with the fender and make shift grab bar. Some of you may remember it, I thought long and hard about putting it on the super xs.

                Remember the super xs12?

I think I like the second one best. It’s just about the same one I used on my favorite orange xs that is my file pic here. This time I cut the front and middle from a 79 xs11sf pan and bolted it into the Harley pan. The resulting fit is something I can just about be happy with.

Oh yeah, I’ve got a set of crash bars put on now too. I’m gonna get a set of highway pegs on this one so when my old ass hips cramp up I can put my feet up there instead of standing and falling off!#*¥!

Looks good, but you NEED a large tail/stop light!!
Take it from someone who was rear ended on the freeway.....
