Well I’m getting some things done on the bike, maybe not much for a real mechanic, but I’m getting there. I finally found a good 140 mph speedometer. The rim was a little marked up and faded so I sanded it in prep to paint it and found a nice silver underneath....so I just wet sanded and polished them both. I think they came out pretty nice. Oh yeah and I ordered two new gaskets from partzilla because they looked so good I didn’t want to trash things up with crappy gaskets.....I ended up spending more for gaskets than I did on my gauges! Lol. Got all my electronics sorted out and working.....when I put the battery in and turned the key I blew 3 out of four fuses on my entirety replaced electrical system! It took a few weeks wanting to blow the thing up but I finally found my problems. Fortunately it was all failed electronics and a grounded out wire but it took checking just about everything to figure out.....I was so close to ripping into the wire harness because I was sure I must have botched up the installation of my new fuse box. Good thing I didn’t, no problems there.
My petcocks and octopus are all polished and rebuilt, new fuel lines all over, carbs are in and it’s purring along at a nice just over 1000 rpm idle. The valves sound great. I took a video but I haven’t figured out how to get my new photo host to post it yet.....says my file is not supported?
Now back to trying to get a seat I love......let’s see, I think I’m on attempt #3 but I’m not moving forward until I’m really happy with it. I have the small seat pan from my wreck...(little eBay cafe racer seat)..I’m going to try and mount the stock foam and cover on it and make a thinner, shorter version of a 79 special seat before I give up and order another Harley solo seat like the orange bomber had on it. Once I finally put an end to my seat saga I can finish the rear end and get this thing done! All it needs is my new mufflers welded on and this seat area cleaned up and I should be good to go!
I haven’t put my new tank on yet and won’t until I’m totally finished, but I did take a pic. Oh yeah I got some new foam grips and a headlight too.
I also ended up trying a drive shaft boot from a maxim 700 cuz it was like new and only $7....it seemed to fit just fine but was a little longer than the stock unit...like one more rib. Anyway I tore the swing arm apart again and put that on too.
