New (to XS1100's)

Good morning ,and thanks for the add.
I just picked up a 79 F model this week.
It supposedly was a Texas Highway patrol bike, but it appears to be more of a hack job , than anything else.
I've had all kinds of m/c's over the last 50 years, starting with 305 Scramblers in High School. I got the idea for an XS11, because it's time for something fairly fast and powerful.
This one is too rough to restore, so I plan to make it into sort of a chopper /drag bike looking thing. (No, not a "bobber" or cafe style) Hope some of you don't mind LOL.
I'll post a few questions in the tech section, but a few quick ones here:

Is there a go advanced post section where you can post pics directly from your server? Don't see it.

It has been recommended that I contact Andreas for used parts. I see he is in The Netherlands. Has that been an issue with money transfers and timely and reasonable shipping costs?

Is there anyone here in the western US that deals in used parts?

Also, is there a member who deals in new, replacement parts?

Welcome to CH11..As far as I know Andreas is located in the Pacific NW ... dunno where you get the netherlands....Good luck bringing one back from the dead..but Andreas is a good bet...keep us posted and someone will also chime in about pics...we love 'em...try postimage...free n easy...

Do your bikes engine and frame numbers match up with the ones in the serial number thread? Just asking as it seems very early on for a cop bike.

Yes, it appears to be a late 79 F model.
When I removed the aluminum headlight and windshield brackets the other day, it didn't register that they said Kawasaki on them, and not Yamaha. So that's what it is . Why? Who knows . I guess I can just get Kawi seals for it then. I don't see a good reason to change it all back yet. When I get into the front calipers, I'll what we got there.
Also ,the running board pads had Kawasaki cast into them. The rear plastic fender was junkyard marked KZ1000. It doesn't fit right anyway, with the back frame all hacked up . I'll worry about it later.

Question. This bike does have the square gauges, but the bracket is all tacked and stacked together. The key switch is also a torch fit.
All XS tachs were electronic, right? The 79 wiring diagram that I lifted off this site, doesn't show a tach at all..just the instrument lights. The 1980 dia.
does show it, triggered off the stator.

The more I think about this, it seems some under-funded Texas county PD maintenance garage pieced this thing back together from a wreck , using whatever they had laying around. This is not conversion by some business, but most likely just a hack repair job.


EDIT: DO all XS, XJ's have square gauges or are some years round?

Yup, front end is Kawasaki Z1000 Police, same as rear fender and rear lamp...

all XS11 tachs are electric and serve double duty as a charging indicator,
if the tach needle don't move off the pin with revs either it's shot or the alternator ain't charging.
All XS11 Standard gauges are square. All XS11 Special gauges are round.
FYI although their tachs are mechanical XS650/750/850 speedos will swap right onto an XS11 Special.
The redlines will be different but the MPH & odometer numbers will be correct
(as will the metric speedos if you can divide and multiply by 0.62 in your head)
