  • Selling my bike

Salutations, my brothers and sisters of XS.
I miss you all, and it is totally my fault, since it is very easy to visit here. I have been going through some rough times for the last 3 years. My bike, “The Phoenix” arisen from the ashes, has sat collecting dust for almost a year. I fractured my left wrist, and while the fracture has healed, it has exasperated my nascent arthritis that has become bad enough that I can hardly squeeze the clutch lever, and the bike itself is too big for me to handle. LoHo said that he has a XJ 750 that he said felt too small for him that he was willing to trade. I was stoked about the possibility, partly because I can't think of anyone other than LoHo or DiverRay that I had rather see the bike go to: but apparently LoHo has personal issues with which he is dealing, and communicating has been very difficult. I have often joked that when I got to old and frail to hold the bike up that I would put a sidecar on it: I've checked into it, and sidecars aren't cheap; a fixer-uper runs almost $1000.
I want to sell her for $500 plus $185 back registration. She (excuse me ladies, but you should be honard being compared to an XS11!) will need a complete servicing; all fluids replaced, brake lines drained and refreshed, etc. The upside is that there are barely 20,000 miles on an engine completely rebuilt by one of the foremost XS11 wrenches on the west coast, if not the whole freaking U.S., namely our one and only DiverRay. Ray said he would help me fix the bike up to sell, but he also has a life, and as big hearted as he is I hate to ask him to take a weekend off to help me. If he did the price would jump up to at least $1000. Features include a top end from a wrecked victim of a drunken game of chicken which both sides lost! Ray can fill in the details, but I know it is an overbore kit with high compression pistons and ported heads. It is so freaking hot the starter will barely turn it over. It is so freaking hot, that when it “comes on the cam” at 4500 RPM the standard clutch plates slip! I do have heavy duty racing clutch springs as well as a pickup bed of spare parts salvaged from “Sparky” when she was salvaged.
This bike will make a red hot bobber or street fighter, but make no mistake; restoring to “Bristol Fashion” will take a lot of work.
I'm actually very interested in building folding electric bike, but thats for another post.
Old bikers never die, they're just out of sight!

My recently re-built, hopped up '79 Special caught fire and burned everything from the top of the engine up: gas tank, wiring, seat, & melted my windshield all over the front of the bike. Just bought a 1980 Special that has been non oped for 9 years. My Skoot will rise from the ashes and be re named "The Phoenix!"
    I've been riding since 1959.

Are you in a position to post pics? I have heard the Phoenix referenced but I just don't have a grasp of what it looks like. I have a trailer with a spring break coming up in a few weeks... Interested, I like the details of the build, per se. Distance is the put off.

Bonz, I don't have any pics of Ed's bike, but I CAN give you a LOT of info on it.
He was going for the "Steam Punk" look, as the bike had sat under a tarp for about 8 years , and has some surface rust issues. I have a set of calipers that I rebuilt 6 months ago for Ed, but they never made it to the bike. Taking it to Colorado, you don't have the non-op issue of California, and that is a good thing. There is about $185 Cali wants, but I believe if you take the bike with a title to Colorado it's a moot point.
The Engine is worth whatever it cost to get the bike, as there are new bearings in the bottom end, and RC Engineering big bore/ported head on top. The clutch has NOT been able to keep the power to the ground from day one after I built the engine, but Ed was not able to get a round tuit for the springs he has in the package...

"Steam." Huh. I've actually been thinking about grabbing a truck and running up to Santa Cruz to visit; see you, Ed, Gypsy and whoever's around and then the "Punk" registration part kicked in:

              Pull the engine
Make a clam trap out of the frame
Toss it in Elkhorn Slough and wait for clams
Flush and clean the sand out of the clams
Wrap the clammy sand in the registration, give it to the DMV and tell them to pound it
Use the heat to steam the clams while putting the engine in another frame

              Simple!

                  Good to hear from y'all

Especially good to hear from you Scott, and Motoman, since I have ridden with you and actually remember what yo look like!
Our rides and rallies are my fondest biker memories: sort of the actualization of my fantasies as I traveled the back roads of Llana Esticata on my Harley "Super 10" searching for a hill or a curve in the road. I may have sold the bike to a fellow grounded biker, but I'll believe it when the deal is done. I wish I could find some pics of it, but I'm afraid that in the process of moving my residence and upgrading my computer I may have lost many photo files. I'll keep y'all posted.

                    You poor man, my condolences!

Hey, I need a road trip so even if you sell the bike are you up for a visit? Can the bike be ridden without too much work if it's registered?

As the resident wrench, I can say the bike will need the carbs cleaned again, front calipers(I have a set just rebuilt for it), and clutch springs(Ed has new ones for it). The other thing is a tire, as Ed put on the wrong Shinko, and it was NOT the "touring" designed for the heavy bike. I think he got about 4K miles on it, but then that engine may have had something to do with it also....

                        Right on!

I'm out of wheels at the moment and I just found out that I have to go back to court in Riverside again for more stupidity with Mom's Trust.

Of course now I may have to be in two different parts of the State I tore into my XJ this week so I can get the frame welded and fix transmission.

Hey all, and especially Special Ed.

Ed, I am sorry about the rigmarole last year about a trade. Before we had solidified plans, my youngest son mentioned that he'd like to get the MC on his license and I let him practice on the XJ700. I told him he could have it after he passed the class and had the endorsement. But he keeps talking about making it a cafe racer or similar nonsense (a complete stock bike in good condition), so those plans may change.

I have not been on here very often because I haven't been riding and the bike works.

If my son does not follow through or decides to buy his own sport bike, I am more than willing to make the XJ available to you. I don't really want to trade; I have grown out of my desire to have a stable of bikes, and would rather have one or two, both of which are ride-able, than the motorcycle rehab unit I am now enjoying. I don't really want a hopped-up ongoing project.

I will spend a few weekends near Santa Cruz this summer. I can trailer the XJ and you can determine if it is do-able, given your ailments.
"Time is the greatest teacher; unfortunately, it kills all of its students."
