  • The importance of battery maintenance

So, it's been probably a year since I've checked my battery, so i decided since i was putting new horns on and had the seat off, I'd pull the battery out and make sure the water levels were okay.
    Here's what i saw. 😲

So, the moral of the story is: Don't forget to check your battery at least twice a year.

Good tip. Evaporation of the electrolite is normal. Battery chargers/tenders can accelerate it.

      Or,
just go AGM and don't be concerned with it any longer.

While an AGM is an alternative, I'm a little old school, so I'm sticking with my wet cell.

George, you're already on the second battery, how much more old-school can you afford? (g,d&r)

Unless you're, like, totally in love with Wallyworld batteries, all five XS1100 batteries at batterymart are AGM for $63 to $115:

No difference Dean. Still a lead acid wet cell battery. AGM stands for Absorbant Glass Mat........slows down the electron flow across battery. Other than that, same, same buddy.

20 years in the Navy dealing with batteries on submarines. I'm very well versed in the free electrolyte cells taking specific gravities every day. The new submarines have AGM sealed cells with a relif valve in case the pressure builds up inside. Aka 'low maintenance'.

I know, the $63 one was out of stock and just refilled today.

Submarine batteries, eh? Those puppies are almost big enough to climb inside the vents and knock the sulphates of the plates or slather on more lead by hand!

Those Battery Mart batteries look remarkably like the "Super Start" batteries from O'Reilly Auto Parts. I have one from O'Reilly in my XJ and it's over 4 years old now and still strong.

I have bought a few AGM batteries from BatteryStuff.com and haven't had any problems with them.

                        https://www.batterystuff.com/powersp...TX24HL-BS.html

I've gone through traditional wet-cell batteries religiously maintained on a battery tender that have only lasted a year or two. For me, AGM has been far more reliable. They're supposed to be more shelf-stable when not maintained, can be shipped charged and ready to go, don't require maintenance of the electrolyte and are more vibration resistant than traditional wet-cell batteries. Yet, there seems to still be naysayers. They represent an advancement in battery technology, right, or did I just drink the Kool-aid?

There is only something like 3 battery manufacturers in the world. They just label them for different companies. There is Johnson Controls, Exide, and I think one other one.
