The teardrop trailer linked by 'nomad' on your link looks similar to the GEICO Caveman's trailer:-

You know the one: The Caveman's singing ZZ Top's "La Grange" as he's riding down the highway on his Ural Patrol with a sidehack and pulling a trailer:-

          A sidehacked Ural
Is that the 2 wheel drive version??? If so, the top speed of the unit is probably about 60MPH! There is the problem with 40+ HP that keeps you out of tickets....except for in town, down hill!

I know and I still want one! The Ural, 'hack, trailer, an electrical system that can't power a stereo so you have to do the singing and a top speed that obviously lets you see and count the grains of sand on the road until it's time for the trailer.

I like the trailer love the dream be great to cruise along out there cruising the back roads feeling free. ........... And now I am back from the dream....... because there are no roads to ride alone on where I am now.

I like the thought of a big trailer but have had the experience of being on a winding hill with too much weight behind a small truck and a tractor trailer with brake issues blaring the horn behind me. So if I can not drive what I have fast enough to get out of the way I just feel vulnerable.
To fix the problem one should not make more assumptions than the minimum needed.

After really looking at them and weighing other options, I'd rather just pack everything on the bike.
With the extra weight and relative instability of a trailer, it's not worth it to me.

I really appreciate the advice and links!
It made decision making much easier.

Wildkat There are options for building a small lite weight trailer that can hall far more than you are capable of hauling on the bike. The issue with buying most trailers is they are big, top heavy, and bulky, and the smaller light weight I have seen for sale are short and quite expensive for what they carry. I have often thought of making an aluminum frame trailer with one of the plastic or fiberglass car/van top carriers but I'd have to change insurance as mine does not cover towing by a motorcycle. My thought is make it light aerodynamic and low to the ground. Trailer should have a wide enough and low enough base that it would slide sideways before rolling over in a curve. Hitch would need to be made to allow lots of role at least to where the bike could contact ground with out trailer interference. Make the hitch and frame to where load weight was forward and in stopping would push down on bike instead of lifting rear up. Leaving the trailer low allows your signal and brake lights to work and be seen. For many states hand signals are appropriate and there may not be a requirement of lights. I have seen designs here where some have built trailers or started them with these components built in.
Weight is an issue but also you can fabricate brakes. I have read discussions where some planed electric brakes. If I were to do mine I would use a hitch hydraulic design. These use the weight of the trailer against the hitch to put hydraulic force back to brakes. I can see where a well designed trailer like this would put minimal force on the bike and be safer than overloading creating a top heavy condition on bike.

I wrote all this so you can understand I am not against trailers but for our bikes it does take something with specific characteristics to keep you safe and we should always strive to give all members and visitors the best advice both positive and negative that our experience provides along with a little humor at times so we can all laugh.

I have known a few folks who have pulled trailers...one person on a Goldwing pulling a huge fold up camper...had to stop very abuptly because of the vehicle ahead of them ...the trailer jack knifed into them and pretty much bowled them over...the incident was on an on ramp to a hwy and the old lady in front of them just plain stops...when they were getting up to hwy speed..they survived but were pretty banged up and the bike was totaled...
Its good to know you'll not risk it...i dont think its worth it with these old bikes...something with a bigger 'platform" would be more sufficient...

I thought about a trailer a couple of decades ago but decided to just load the bike heavy.Kicked the rear shocks to the max,Metzler 880's to the max and never had a problem,,a little top heavy but ya just deal with it and then you don't even notice it.

Did you ride that on one wheel or two Seriously I understand have done it before myself and you have to do what you need to do. It also depends on your stature and strength how heavy you can safely load a bike. If you were 130 lbs 5 ft 5 with a weak leg or shoulder that might be too much.

The video of the ST1000 hauling a trailer on 33 was pretty good but that is what I would expect from a well designed 300 pound trailer. But if it was 600 pounds going down hill on a rougher road and a lesser design trailer it might be a totally different look and feel.
To fix the problem one should not make more assumptions than the minimum needed.
