Friggin' Road Hazards!

Hey folks,

Was driving home in my little Eco box....hit a large piece of metallic junk in the road that I didn't realize /see and have enough time to swerve to avoid....BLAM into my left front tire!
I didn't notice any THUMPING or vibration sensations afterwards, but when I got home, took a look and this is what I found!





Looks like I broke some bands in the carcass and have a little BLISTER in the sidewall!?

The tires are just ~2 years old, and only ~20K miles on them. I have rotated that tire from the front to the rear JUST IN CASE of a blowout so that I can better handle the steering affect.

However, I'm pretty sure of the answer, but just asking if you mechanics feel that I should REPLACE this tire ASAP, or if I can continue driving on it monitoring the BLISTER for any increasing in size? The tire came with the car, I don't think or know if there is any road hazard warranty on it, so it might be ALL out of my pocket to replace it.
My Swmbo had lost her job a few months ago, and so $$ has been a bit tight for a little while(aside from the $$ I had put away for my Godzilla rebuild ), and so would not like to spend much $$ right now if I don't have to...she's starting her new job next Monday!

Ouch!........whatcha' might consider, even though it's re-located to the rear, is additional cost of wheel if it were to blow out while driving.

In my opinion, that tire is not going to have a catastrophic immediate blow out. You did the smart thing and moved it to the back (just in case it goes flat). Personally, if I didn't have a road hazard replacement warranty, I'd drive the pee out of it and wouldn't replace until it's time is due, but it would not ever find itself back on the front so no rotation.....

HOWEVER, it that was on one of my kids cars I'd replace it immediately. Not because I fear a catastrophic blow out but because I don't want my kid out on the highway changing it IF it went flat.

It took me years to pay off the lawsuit when I had a bad tire but drove on it anyway with no insurance and hit a van full of farm workers. Because I knew it was a bad tire I got sued for something about gross negligence operating/maintaining a motor vehicle and causing great bodily harm along with the property damage.

It taught me something and I wouldn't do it again just because I have insurance now because money and insurance wasn't the point: I was stupid and people got hurt, seriously hurt, because of me.

TC if it were cooler weather I might try it for a bit but given the heat and the heat while on the interstate I personally would not tempt it as it is. Used tire place the best bet but if the size you need does not work they do make tubes for different types of tires and they may make one that works for your tire application. There are places that will apply an inside patch and way back companies who would apply a vulcanized patch. None of these methods guarantee a long term solution as with cords damage it can tear but they do provide a level of blow out protection you do not have depending on the outside not ballooning out on you. Speed is a definite issue as well as a full load of passengers but its a hard choice to eat or buy a tire.

You could use giant zip-ties to R&R the tire like for a motorcycle tire if you find a tube for it. No tire shop would tube or remount a tire with sidewall damage unless they were replacing it with a good tire.

Come on TC you know you need to put another tire on. Do not drive the car until you can find the $$ to correct that.
BANG it takes milliseconds for the air to escape and the tire then shreds itself against the body work leaving you with a much larger expense. That is if you manage to hang onto it and don't end up in the ditch upside down

Over here in New Zealand thats an immediate safety issue and would fail a Warrant Of Fitness, a mandatory safety check we must have to be on the road. Any police officer that stopped the car, for any reason, would order it off the road until it was changed.

Your life, and the lives of your family, and other road users is worth more than a 50 dollar tyre.

99.999999% of the time everything will be fine but the regs weren't written just to frustrate people even though there is plenty of blatant authoritarianism and pedantic pettifoggery too.


Lest y'all think I'm just paranoid and obsessed after getting the court judgement I went boonie stomping in the mud and rain with my girlfriend/future-ex-first-wife. I eventually got the car stuck in the mud several miles into the back country and after a long walk in the rain we got a truck and went back to get the car, my '64 Corvair. The windows were shattered all over the interior and the rear view and side mirrors were broken off and smashed into the mud along with some other stuff I don't even remember now. And the car was intentionally filled with mud and water.

I barely managed to afford the glass and replaced it myself, then went for a quick test drive. I got pulled over after less than a block because of the missing side mirror and was cited for failure to maintain proper safety equipment on the vehicle.

When I went to court and explained what happened I also received two years summary probation on top of the fine.

3 Phase you are 100% correct but their are people like a neighbor I have with cords showing 6 months past the state inspection and dead tags and they go every day but the difference is TC has something and if he makes a mistake they take everything from him. The people I am talking about just do it all again and have nearly no loss. Yes they were given a ticket in fact 3 and have paid non of them.

So TC just has to get a 50.00 worn tire to get him by.

Hey Folks,

Thanks for the input. I just checked the tread depth with caliper, it's about 4.5 mm left after 22k miles.
I was surprised to find that these tires were fairly expensive types!
Hankook Optimo 428 205/55R16, I found the cheapest new one for $111 with Free S&H.
A tube was going to be at least $18.00 plus mounting/fitting and balancing extra as well as removing the valve stem/TPS device!

However, I also found a good quality USED one on Amazon for $41.00 free S&H!!
It says it has between 6-7/32nds which equals ~4+ mms tread depth left, which will just match the others!

Not sure if I can perform the tire change myself with just the 3 24" long tire irons and such that I used for my bike tires, along with a large C-clamp for bead breaking? Will have to check what price I can get for local change/balance.

I would like to also find a 16 full size steel/metal rim that I could put this tire onto for a better quality spare than the friggin PIZZA mini tire that it comes with!
